Listen to me. When you have two opposing positions, the two parties will usually try to find common ground that accommodates them both. But if the two parties can't find common ground, then the stronger will impose their will on the weaker party.

As an American, that is the situation that you are already now.

The right-wing portion of your population plainly sees no common ground with the more liberal portion, and the future of your country is going to depend on who exactly has the power to force their opinion down the other side's throat.

This is already happening. We can discuss policy endlessly on a liberal leaning blog like SE, but the other side isn't interested in discussion. It doesn't matter who has the correct argument, there isn't enough room for compromise and future belongs to who can enforce their vision.

Frankly, irony and rational discussion are no longer relevant. You are in a struggle for the soul and future of your country, and unless you are willing and able to force your vision on your opponents against their free will, they will undoubtedly do the same to you.
