quote [ The pregnancy policy it states that if a teacher or administrator suspects a female student of being pregnant (whether she is pregnant or not) the school can require her to have a pregnancy test and even select the physician. If the student is pregnant, she won't be permitted to attend classes on the campus of Delhi Charter School ]
I really didn't want to post MORE depressing news, especially seeing as how my outrage meter has been off the charts lately, but this is just too horrible to NOT post.

"If we even suspect yo' ass is pregnant, then we can force you to get an examination. If you sass us about that, then we can kick you out." As an educator, my response is: SCREW. THAT. This stance violates what professional ethics the profession claims. We aren't in the 19fuckin'50s anymore. My solace: I think Title IX wins in this case. That's Civil Rights legislation; it has a long history of trumping screwy school policies. Their policies manual: http://www.delhicharterschool.org/www/dcscharter/site/hosting/Delhi_Charter_School_Policy_Manual.html |

I am amused at this excerpt from the manual's policies on teaching sex education. "Whenever instruction in sex education is offered, such instruction shall also be available to any student in the school, regardless of the student's grade level, who is pregnant or who is a mother or father." Of course, kid, you're gonna have to get that instruction at home, if you are a pregnant girl. If we even think you're knocked up, you're kicked out. :( |

Sorry, that was supposed to be a +1 WTF. This is way fucked-up. Charter schools should be subject to the same policies as public schools, but way down in Redneckistan I guess anything goes. Good to see the ACLU on the case. |

One of the specific intentions with regards to charter schools is that they are not subject to the same policy regulations as standard independent school districts. The charter laws vary from state to state (big differences, for example, between Texas and Louisiana), but the key point is that charters can ignore most stateside regulations, as long as they are showing hard evidence of academic progress/successes. Under no circumstances at all are they allowed to ignore USA federal law (such as Special Education law). |

Right. When I say 'the same policies' I'm referring to federal mandates like Title IX. |

It doesn't get a lot of press, but Tennessee is very good at enacting laws based in ideology that should have been extinct at roughly the same time and for the same reason as phlogiston and the four bodily humours. They love Confederate flags on hundred-foot poles and named a state park after one of the Klan's founding members, Nathan Bedford Forrest. Not that Florida isn't a backwards shithole. |

Whenever I hear of people having trouble with local bigots or repressive state governments, my first reaction is usually "That's too bad. He/she should move to California." I know that's not realistically an option for everyone, but it really ought to be. |

I'm from California and even in the worst places I've live here at least people were ashamed of being bigoted a-holes. Not so everywhere. Unrelated, I got offered a job in New York and the monetary value of having a support network really hit home. I didn't end up taking it because even being a better job I don't think I could have done it. |
