The city of Troy, Michigan was facing a budget shortfall, and was considering closing the Troy Public Library for lack of funds. Even though the necessary revenues could be raised through a miniscule tax increase, powerful anti-tax groups in the area were organized against it. A vote was scheduled amongst the city's residents, to shut the library or accept the tax increase, and Leo Burnett Detroit decided to support the library by creating a reverse psychology campaign. Yard signs began appearing that read: "Vote to Close Troy Library on August 2nd - Book Burning Party on August 5th." No one wants to be a part of a town that burns books, and the outraged citizens of Troy pushed back against the "idiotic book burners" and ultimately supported the tax increase, thus ensuring the library's survival.

meh. The point of the Troy library is exactly the opposite. It is not big media that is controlling the media that is paid attention to. The power of social media can create new possibilities. After all, isn't that the point of SE? |

There has been over 9,300 signatures turned in to put the recall of the mayor on the November ballot. Quote from the mayor on her facebook page: "I think I am going to throw away my I Love New York carrying bag now that queers can get married there." Daniels confirmed today that she did post the message, though she said she decided against ditching the bag. “I may have said something like that,” she said. “I probably shouldn’t have used that kind of language, but I do believe marriage should be between one man and one woman.” When Mayor Daniels finally addressed making the slur, she chose not to apologize for hurting people, rather, she regretted “[having] said it” acknowledging only that that it was “inappropriate language.” In the weeks that followed the outrage, Mayor Daniels met with a high school group. The group wanted to hold an event celebrating diversity and tolerance. At the meeting, Mayor Daniels stated that she would "bring in psychiatrists who will tell you that the homosexual lifestyle is dangerous.” This comment caused further outrage in and out of the community and further embarrassed the city and its residents. www.recalljanice.com |

Is that like the Standard Conservative Media Trope of taking any criticism of a conservative's position by a liberal as "intolerance" (even though it isn't -- tolerance is not the same as respect or agreement) and then triumphantly whining about how the liberal is a hypocrite because the stereotypical liberal that lives only in conservatives' heads is constantly yelling "tolerance!" at them? |

glad the Library got saved, it at least was at one time, probably the best library in the northern suburbs. computerized earlier, well stocked, all kinds of magazines available, a lot of scientific research type books, etc. When i was in High School, my chemistry teacher required us to go there to look up how to conduct our experiments, write it up and submit it (much like college requirements) before we could conduct the experiment. |
