and in and out of weeks
and almost over a year
to where the wild things are. ]

Thanks for noticing. I was starting to think my weenie wasn't a big deal anymore.

He made for a lot of happy reading hours when I was a child.
arrowhen said @ 8:23pm GMT on 8th May
I never read him as a kid because I thought kids books were "for babies". When I was my tastes ran more toward things like the dictionary and a stack of old science textbooks that I got hold of somehow.

In high school, though, I decided to acquaint myself with some of the childhood classics I'd missed out on and Sendak was definitely one of my favorites.

“Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.”

“Dear Mr. Sendak,” read one, from an 8-year-old boy. “How much does it cost to get to where the wild things are? If it is not expensive, my sister and I would like to spend the summer there.”

I remember thinking the exact same thing when I was a kid and my Mom read this story to me. I wanted to go to where the wild things were and go on a rumpus!!
arrowhen said @ 4:07am GMT on 9th May
The trick is not to go where the wild things are, it's to be the wild things and bring the rumpus to you.
