Sewing gets better after a while -- it's a skill like any other, after all. I'm reasonably experienced with it, but there's some fucking magic with patterns and a sewing machine that my mother can do that just leaves me speechless. Your way is... maybe not the best, but it should make the next project easier none the less. As for the ring mail... I know from my earlier days of LARPing (which I came to realize was horrible because it sucks sleeping in a tent in the forest when it's raining and your idiot friends wants everything to be as "realistic" as it can get, even going so far as to complain about a sleeping bag, all the while running around with less-than-realistic weapons or even names for that matter) that we contacted some spring manufacturer and had them punch out about 15k rings for us to use. Wasn't terribly expensive, either (I could afford it when in high school, after all). The actual company is still in business, apparently, but I suppose shipping from Sweden wouldn't be cost-effective. |

While that is true, as someone who attended DragonCon, you're not seeing (or smelling) a lot of the more "unfortunate" cosplayers. There does seem to be a trend for those who aren't svelte or "pretty" to gravitate towards steampunk, Klingons, or other costumes that don't involve outfits designed to put more appealing flesh and form on display. Though I think DragonCon is among the upper-tier cosplay conventions, outdoing San Diego by quite a long measure. I think it's because of not only the attendees, but the way the con is structured; you can mill around the three large hotels pretty much 24/7 and see a constant parade of costumes. |

Anime cosplay is big business. There are pros and cons. Would you spend money on materials to make a costume than buy one that would cost just as much as the materials you bought for what you'd make? |
|
Krutz
said @ 2:34am GMT on 23rd Sep
Neither. I don't care for anime. Not to mention that among cosplayers, some of them have this massive attitude problem if you don't know who they're supposed to be. This problem is compounded by (1) anime being a medium that can have really obscure titles/characters, (2) not being able to watch even a majority of it, if you were inclined to do so, and (3) the mash-up and made-up characters. The third item could be a female version of Dante from "Devil May Cry" or something, but quite a few of the unrecognizable ones are homebrew (or worse, OEL webcomic characters from some barely-visited area of ComicsGenesis) whose creators are very annoyed that they aren't as famous as that hack who puts out "Megatokyo." It's like going to a "Rock Musician Con" and not recognizing the guy who's supposed to be dressed as an amalgam of Hendrix/Lennon/Cobain only to get yelled at by the lead signer for "Bingy-Bongy and the Turpentine Howitzers" because you've never watched their YouTube channel. |
|
damnit
said @ 3:29am GMT on 23rd Sep
I take it back. It's not just anime. All kinds of costumes, as far as conventions go, are big business. For the most part, people dress up to be part of it. There are lots of fugly examples not shown in the DragonCon video above. People get mad props for self-made. But from my experience, most of the really good ones were created by cosplay businesses advertising their work. What really matters in the end is if they can pull it off. Like that hot girl dressed as Raiden from Metal Gear Solid 4. |

most of the really good ones were created by cosplay businesses advertising their work. Very worth noting. Not only do publishers hire attractive people to dress as their characters, but costume-makers hire attractive people to wander around in costumes. This is the sort of gig that would attract aspiring models/actresses. I can attest that there are many at any large con. This goes for the males as well. If he looks like he works out for a living, it's entirely possible he does and this is a gig to make some cash and get some exposure. |
