quote [ In 1942, soon after the United States entered World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an executive order creating the Office of War Information (OWI). The new agency was tasked with releasing war news, promoting patriotic activities, and providing news outlets with audio, film, and photos of the government's war efforts. ]
Some really candid and intimate shots from an important time in our world's history.

Interesting pictures. Say maybe that's what's needed to get Americans working again another war. |

The military-industrial complex is doing pretty well with the ones we've got. |

But who can be bothered to remember to check every week for the next 15 weeks every time it's updated? Nice to have a reminder every so often. |

I'm guessing the captions came with the photos? Every time a woman is show doing anything remotely important looking the caption mentions how "carefully trained" she is. Y'know, by a man. The only black guy gets no commentary, only location and date. Simply products of the time, but it is interesting when you notice the little things that show progress happened. |

I only saw "carefully trained" in one caption. |

To be fair, the black guy is referred to as "colored mechanic". |

They had to explain stuff like that back then because color photography was still new! |

There's something about seeing photos from the past in colour that makes those times and eras so much more real to me, for some reason. I think that when I see something in black & white, it's easy to detach it from reality and history in my mind. My grandfather's war stories are always set in B&W in my imagination, set to a jaunty 40s swing soundtrack... But people & circumstances tend to become more real in colour... |

The commentary at the top does note that most of the home front pictures were posed, produced as propaganda by the Office of War Information. What's striking is how closely the photos of the attractive people in the photos resemble their counterparts in Soviet propaganda images of the time. |
