Pacific Sun cruiseliner gets tossed around big time by the sea (to the tune "Sailing")

quote [ The impact of massive waves that struck a cruise ship during a storm off New Zealand have been revealed by CCTV footage posted on the internet. ]

Main link is to Liveleak video with funny accompanying music track. Extended has article, another instance of a liner in a storm (thumb is from that) and a somewhat more serious take on the problem. Why don't they tie stuff down and provide seat belts somewhere aboard?

Just saying.

As was the "tie stuff down" comment. The company has already rectified these issues.

Worse yet, Sensible Facial doesn't let me see the usual Youtube screen in posted videos-- just a black rectangle so unless I click on EVERY video in EVERY comment, I don't have any hope of seeing those.

Of course. Why didn't I think of that? The whole purpose of sensible facial is to have it turned off while looking at SE. Silly me.

"Passengers who were aboard the journey were offered a 25 per cent reduction in the cost of a future cruise."

Well, that seems like a reasonable compensation for being on a ship where nothing is tied down and you get tables and chairs tossed on you.

KropperPrime said @ 9:32pm GMT on 8th Sep
Basically turning a catastrophe into a marketing ploy.

Now they have to dish out 75% of the aforementioned "future cruise", in order to cash in on their "compensation".

How about they refund 25% of the horrible cruise they just had.
captainstubing said @ 9:42pm GMT on 8th Sep
Agreed, but it does give you a clue where their margins are...

When I was in the Navy we turned the ship sideways against 50ft swells and the whole thing rocked port to starboard at a 45%+ angle.
Then we had a "man overboard" drill which means everyone had to report to main deck for a headcount.
I fondly remember the deck swaying such that I could reach directly in front of me and touch it then wait a few seconds and reach behind me to touch it again .. all without bending my spine at all :)

To be fair, the main deck of Navy ships are painted with "Non-Skid", and it lives up to it's name.

That was a good day ;D

I have to say this is more fun to watch than all those stomach virus outbreaks and fires that plagued cruise lines a few years back.

Though there was some sinister glee in seeing a Disney ship belching smoke.

-1 old as well.
This happened in July 2008.

According to London's Daily Telegraph, 42 people were injured after the P&O ship ran into a storm about 650 kilometres of the coast of New Zealand in July 2008.
