Sensible Clue - Day Six

quote [ As far as regrets I don't have any, would you? ]

The Rules of the Game

Whodunit?

At start of day one each player receives three ‘Cards’, a character (viewable by all), a weapon, and the room in which the player began the game. Someone has not survived the first night in the hall, and a killer walks among you.

Players must use the process of elimination to determine who the killer is. Each night every player can ask me to reveal to them another player’s weapon, or learn which room they started in. The killer will be a player who no longer has a weapon. Players are not allowed to reveal the results of their questioning within game threads, nor are they allowed to reveal their own starting room or weapon. No players can message other players outside of the game unless they are part of the Mafia Group. ‘Cards’ (weapon and room) will be revealed on death. i.e ‘On examination of the body, a small length of rope was found hidden inside Miss Scarlet’s coat lining. Her other belongings were found where she had left them in the Library.

Once per day a player may send a PM to me detailing their guess as to who is the killer, for example ‘Mrs Peacock, in the library, with the candlestick.’ Though the killer will no longer be in possession of the weapon used, players must still by process of elimination make a correct guess as to what she used to kill the victim. A player who guesses all three elements correctly will be confirmed and can reveal their findings immediately. If you receive no reply, you were incorrect.

Town cannot win while the killer is at large. Until such time as the initial crime is solved, the killer will evade lynches and night-kills. The only other person who can reveal the identity of the killer is the investigator, upon a successful reading. If a player works out who the killer is based on their results, i.e ‘Miss Violet has no weapon’ they are not able to share this within the day threads but must continue to work on the puzzle in order to vanquish her. The killer will strike again every night until the first murder is solved, for game purposes he functions as a Serial Killer.

But there’s more...

Lured by the promise of valuable plunder and a priceless discovery, a group of shady figures have wrangled or stolen invitations to the festivities. They will stop at nothing to get what they have come for, and woe betide any guest who gets in their way. The best of these criminals will be someone you would swear to be no more dangerous than a kitten- but be warned, this kitten will scratch. You may have heard such a mastermind called by the name Godfather.

Be advised, when a Mafioso uses their kill ability there is a small chance that the weapon is lost at the scene. If this happens, that Mafioso is unable to carry out further night kills.

Other Special Roles:

Investigators
- There will be those who are able to use their sleuthing skills to keep watch on guests during the nights. But be careful, one always seems to jump to the wrong conclusions.

Doctor- The Doctor will always try to put his skills to use in keeping his fellow guests healthy and hale, if he can be in the right place at the right time.

Vigilante - The Vigilante is driven by a sense of justice and righteousness. He is happy to take the law into his own hands to take out any threats to innocents, though his aim is fallible.

Moving Right Along...

In this game, where you are may prove as important as who you lynch. Each evening you will need to let me know in which room you intend to begin the following day. People who use actions during the night phase will have to start the game no more than one room away from the room in which their action occurred, if it occurred on the ground floor. N.B Rooms connected via secret passages (e.g Lounge/Conservatory, Study/Kitchen) count as one room away. All bedrooms are on the above floors, and those who do not have night actions are judged to stay in them throughout the night phase. Mafia and Serial killers will dispose of any bodies in the ground floor rooms.

It was morning, at least according to the clocks. Sunlight didn’t penetrate the metal fortress the guests had begun to call ‘home’. As the guests descended the staircase it was clear that the Library was where the night’s dastardly deeds were carried out.

Two bodies lay in a macabre embrace on the Persian rug before the fireplace. One, the unfortunate Mr. Almond, had several crossbow bolts embedded in his chest; it was unclear what had befallen his partner in death, Monsieur Ivoire- though it had certainly left him fittingly pale. On his person was a small bottle of Paraffin, seal unbroken. It was clear neither of the pair had been working with the murderers.

Then, in the ashes of the fireplace the guests noticed a charred leather-bound journal. Though most of the contents had been destroyed there were some strange jottings and diagrams that had survived, and partial references to some of the guests.

After a time Madame Chartreuse was able to translate an unburnt passage that revealed that Monsieur Ivoire had been none other than famed crime-solver Inspector Clouseau, French Detective Extraordinaire. “Merde!” she cried, “ ‘owever shall we ‘ope to uncover ze murderers now?!”

The guests quickly located the rest of the Inspector’s belongings in the Ball Room, but there was no information to help them there, either. Whatever the good Inspector had found, the knowledge died with him.

Mr. Almond's remaining belongings were found in the Lounge, and revealed him to be an agent on assignment from the CIA. It seemed almost every world power was in attendance, hoping to leave with Mr. Black’s invention.

The remaining guests looked at each other with scarcely masked terror and suspicion- some of those here thought it was worth everyone else’s lives to get their hands on, and unless the guests could stop them soon, they would never again see daylight.

When people started fixing votes in other people's names, I wanted to show this. The problem was that the only way to tell from the HTML when someone is comment under someone else's name is to compare the commenter's SE number with other comments.

So, if user 27061 comments 10 times as Mopy J and once as skainsmate, the script guesses that user 27061 is probably Mopy J and changes the skainsmate to skainsmate(really Mopy J).

This breaks down sometimes when people haven't commented enough, and the script guesses they're somebody else.

I'm guessing that by this stage, a third of the players are mafia. On the one hand this means that we're going to have to improve our hit rate or the game will be over in a few days. On the other hand, by this stage the remaining mafia members will be mostly having to make a second kill each, narrowing down the potential candidates.

I know you know some innocent people and guilty people. I'd like you to confirm my vote accuracy. To do this, I would like you to type something. (or not) If the sentence starts with gthat means "guilty" mafia. If it starts with a u that means "unknown", I haven't confirmed anything. If the semtence starts with an N that means "not guity" not mafia.

Townies, I'd like you to type some false sentences so the investigator can blend in.

Now that I've got my spreadsheet updated here are the possible mafia candidates based on proximity to the body and my thoughts on each:

1. Zelguis - I think he's town, although can't say for sure.
2. King P - I think he's a big suspect for mafia, although I only have my gut feelings to go on.
3. Lilmookie - Think he's innocent and is what it seems, crazy invest.
4. Stension - Have a feeling just as bad about him as I do King P
5. Eightysix - Feel he's town, but can't confirm it. I'd really hate for him to be mafia considering how helpful he's been.
6. Saranated - Feel he's mafia, also he voted for Solitude for the past two days with no reason. Makes me wonder.
7. Me - I'm town, but I can't definitively prove this to anyone without being investigated.

So of the seven, there are three people I suspect: King P, Stension, Saranated. I think if we look here, we'll find a mafia.

Also, one more person who I have been suspecting that wasn't by the body today, but I want to make my suspicions known. Dead_bob. Call it another gut feeling, but his voting has put me off. His votes have been mostly throw aways, as if he's trying not to be involved in the game. Yesterday he voted for Drunk when there was clearly a double lynch in the works. For someone to ignore what is going on about that double lynch and then to say "Yeah, okay, Drunk seems guilty cause your argument has persuaded me" just seems....all too calculated. Like he was purposely trying to avoid the bandwagons but wanted to stop looking like he wasn't paying attention.

Anyhow, my two cents.
eightysix said @ 5:32pm GMT on 30th Jul
I hope today we generate many discussions. Last couple days too fixated, and I feel it was net loss.

It impossible to tell about people who not say much, unfortunately. I don't like mafia who don't talk much, but townie who don't contribute is worse in many aspect. Only hit as town is juju, and that was bit of a mess too. Almost had to narrow down almost everyone in 5 possible suspect before got her. I have no magic bullet for find the mafia, and situation very bad. Only way I think is be single minded, focus one, lynch, find information, move on. Ask who we lynch and can find most information from, more often than not, it not going to be mafia but after review evidence, can root out everyone. Best hope for town win like this.

Be honest, I not really trust you too, Bodnoirbabe. Many conjectures like above, but I think I'm same. In dead_bob case, I willing to absolve guilt because there one mafia up for lynch. Could have easily changed vote to save juju, but didn't. Would be shitty sacrifice if he mafia. Instead of guilty list, I also keep mindful of not guilty list. Better chance of narrow down like this. But town number too little to say who likely not guilty, will make them mafia target.

One more thought I wondering is if we still have sane investigator. If no, then mookie maybe our ace in hole.
lilmookieesquire said @ 5:43pm GMT on 30th Jul
You are all fucked.

Anyway, the mafia kept me alive, I presume, because I'm a bit off...

But a doctor is dead.
The vigilantie is dead.
The sane investigator is dead
James Brown is dead.
And I'm pretty sure the mafia is narrowing in on CB's card- which may null his night kill if he gets exposed ingame.

I'm hoping that there is another sane investigator, in which case I think we can win.

If not, we better make this round count- because it seems the mafia might be able to kill me tonight (if they so desire) and possibly kill CB by exposing his card).

86, you are one of the people I distrust the least, what is your take on things?

I'd also love to hear from other people.

If you have information, confirm please and tell us by end of day in case you not make it through the night. I been trying to find your patterns, but you hard cookie to figure out sometimes, so window for coming through with information is small.

I have a plan, but it only make small difference so maybe wait more people to speak before decide if I want to go through.
lilmookieesquire said @ 5:35pm GMT on 30th Jul
I get the feeling *cough cough* is the Godfather, but I can't really confirm that because I don't really know quite how crazy investigation works... But the message I got was a bit odd. It indicated that this person searches through things (implying investigator- which frankly I kind of doubt) but, I felt that something wasn't "quite right". That bothers me because normally my investigations are really sure of innocence (CB wouldn't hurt a fly) or strongly guilty (pel, zeglius). This middle of the road thing bothers me- and I think there is a weird logic that the crazy investigator could somehow semi ID the Godfather... but that's not something to bet the game on. I don't think we have to get a big fish today, bit I think we have to get a hit. So, if I may digress...

My suspicions lay with Saranated, but we got to pretty much be in this together.

Zeglius gave me a strong (crazy) guilt which makes me think he's innocent.

But that is assuming I get opposite investigations, and not just crazy ones.

This is a rant OOC: I am so sick and tired of hearing this as an excuse. It's not just you, it's been a lot of people during this game. People know how involved these mafia games can get and if you suspect that you won't be able to pay attention as much as possible, don't sign up! It's that simple.

I understand you can't always predict what your work schedule would be like or if you're going to get sick, but if you do, and it makes you give less than your best attention, bow out of the fucking game. I have much respect for snowfox and redriverrat doing just that.

Not participating fucks up the game and it's affected this game a lot. Brat has been really nice not to mod kill too many people who haven't participated, but you're being really rude to brat. I know she spent a lot of time putting this together and you're fucking it up. Not you partivculary, stension, just everyone who signed up and isn't playing.

Yeah yeah, the threads are long, there's too much info. Wah fucking wah. This is the game. Get your heads out of your asses or quit, but don't fuck it up for everyone else.

That is all.
skainsmate said @ 11:08pm GMT on 30th Jul
I apologize. Seeing these rants has guilted me into typing more. I've tried to keep abreast of things, but haven't had strong enough hunches to voice much. I didn't mean to bother folks (especially since low participation certainly was a pet peeve of my own back when I used to play). Anyway, in recognition of this hypocrisy I will talk about my general feelings about a couple players.

Bodnoirbabe: helpfulness in information gathering made me think was town, but starting to worry if it was an attempt to curry favor and lead the town. still, probably town

CB and lilmookie: clearly the SK and nutjob, respectively

I feel that a low-lying mafia can, in fact, contribute to townie quietness, since it leaves many of us unmoved.
archangel_2 said @ 11:20pm GMT on 30th Jul
I honestly thought Bodnoirbabe was mafia, given our conversations yesterday, and was waiting to see that juju was innocent and macst34 was guilty. When it was the opposite, I've come to decide that she's pulling a KingPellinore, and is actually a townie.
archangel_2 said @ 11:09pm GMT on 30th Jul
Sorry, but I disagree. In previous games, going above a hundred comments in a day was a HUGE amount of comments to weed through! This game? Let's look:

Day One: 224
Day Two: 161
Day Three: 262
Day Four: 263
Day Five: 136

Do I understanding that a mafia game can have days where they get above 100 comments? Yes! I do! But above TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY?? That's a fucking rarity. I mean, EXTREME rarity. And it's happened twice in this game! So no, this game is not typical, and goes well above and beyond what a person might expect when he signed up for it. And to say that someone shouldn't sign up because they can't keep up with that...well, tough. I like playing these games, and as people die off, the number of comments decrease. So even in these games, I'm willing to hang on (if I survive that long) until the comments go down so I can actually participate - like yesterday.

To say that people shouldn't sign up because they can't handle extremes of games would mean that, since I was focused on getting into the fucking Paramedic program instead of playing this game at a time when comments reached astronomical levels, and am now participating (when life isn't getting in the way so much and the game has a more reasonable comment count).

I guess what I'm saying is: tough. EVERY game has people who don't participate, for one reason or another, so you'd think you'd be used it by now. And to say that you're upset that people aren't participating when it gets unreasonable to keep up...well, any future GMs can decide if they don't want to let someone into their game, but the fact that brat#3 isn't mod-killing means that she's decided that nonparticipation is acceptable in her game. Don't like it? Don't play yourself.

I don't want add to this discussion, but think voting is minimum one can do.
archangel_2 said @ 12:44am GMT on 31st Jul
so is it any wonder that most games have people not participating?
brat#3 said @ 12:48am GMT on 31st Jul
..but people participating would make *more* comments, not less. I don't know how you think you can get more people playing with fewer comments to have to read.
archangel_2 said @ 1:00am GMT on 31st Jul
Okay, so I'm in the minority opinion here. I still say it's up the moderator to moderate. If you want more people participating, mod-kill for lack of comments (not just lack of votes), but you've gone in the opposite direction (no mod-kills, not even for lack of voting). Why is that?
Todomanna said @ 1:14am GMT on 31st Jul
Didn't she mod-kill Jewypez on day two?

This conversation lead nowhere good. How bout just find mafia? That better plan.
DeadCarbonCopy said @ 10:55pm GMT on 31st Jul
unless he's mafia and is using this discussion to up his comment count to make himself look less suspicious. if that's the case then this is about finding the mafia. continue the conversation!

You know what? Fine. I didn't participate for several days in a row more than a cursory skimming of the posts to throw a vote each day. I've submitted my withdrawal from the game to brat#3 for my failure. Have a good game.
spite48 said @ 1:39am GMT on 31st Jul
I genuinely like everyone who plays these games, and so it is with utmost respect to everyone that I say: everyone must chill out. And yes, I mean everyone.

It's just a game, but it's a game that relies on sporting behavior and mutual respect.

People are getting genuinely offended by each other and bailing on the game, and that's an insult to Brat#3. She's running a good game here.

Snowfox bailed for a reason that no-one can fault, and people get busy - that I understand. People have varying levels of interest in these games.

If you want people to participate more - then engage them. If you want people to be more respectful, or less nasty - tell them so. That's what happened last game when a player was perceived as being dickish - and it worked.

That's all.
Bodnoirbabe said @ 7:53am GMT on 31st Jul
You don't have to do that, dude. You're not even who I'm talking about. I think your participation has been fine.

Anyhow, you know that anger you feel right now about the things I've said? Well I feel that same anger and frustration about the state of this game. That's where that rant came from.

I mean, come in. There are 35 players total and of those maybe only 15 have participated actively the entire length of the game. 15! And I think I'm being generous. 20 people just sitting around not doing anything, not paying attention, not helping ideas, muddling up the voting patterns by throwing away votes or not voting at all.

It. Is. Fucking. Frustrating.

I don't know why you're having such a strong reaction to my rant, especially considering it wasn't even about you, but if I've hurt your feelings, I'm sorry. But I stand by what I said. I think Brat has put together an excellent game here and people are crapping on it. You know and I know just how hard it is to put a game together, to dedicate the time and energy. When people join and then just don't play, it's disappointing and it's frustrating and it sucks.

There is no need for you to quit unless you genuinely believe that your "nonparticipation" is affecting the outcome of the game. Frankly, I think you're participating just fine and it's others that I had in mind when I was ranting. I'd list names, but why make more enemies than I already seem to have made just by wanting people to PLAY THE FUCKING GAME THEY SIGNED UP FOR.

Seriously dude, you're cutting off your nose to spite your face.
Stension said @ 1:14pm GMT on 1st Aug
I understand why you're frustrated. I've never been one to comment much in mafia games anyways, I enjoy sitting back, watching the debate and making small moves. For this game - I think brat#3 has put together a truly amazing game. I just have had too many other issues crop up for me to participate. I'm not asking for a modkill as that messes up the balance, but I'm only capable of participating at a minimum level.
lilmookieesquire said @ 4:38am GMT on 31st Jul
It's easy for me not to crack under pressure since I'm already cracked.

People play at their own pace, but I understand the complaint about not being able to ferret out quiet mafia.

It's a lovely game. I'll gladly accept all the plantations on account that I am a good boy!

Playstations.
lilmookieesquire said @ 3:47am GMT on 1st Aug
You know...

Last time I played a game where King P was the mafia's God Father.

He was quite brilliant at it, I realized after reading the backlogs.

He kept very quiet that game.

I'm seriously thinking about switching my vote to King P or trying to get a double lynch.

At the same time I should note, I have nothing to back up the guilt of either of these players, but I'd like them to talk more.
brat#3 said @ 7:51pm GMT on 1st Aug
Sorry for being late with the end of day, I'm sick and ended up going to bed before day was over. Thank you everyone for your messages of support and for letting me know that people are still enjoying the game :) I will get something together as soon as two small children allow. xxx

Everyone was exhausted. Five nights of little sleep, food, or comfort had left conversation in short supply. By midway through the day the attention was fixed on two of the guests who had fallen asleep in the middle of the floor.

“Only the guilty can sleep soundly, that’s what I’ve heard”.

“Look at them, so peaceful. They’re obviously happy with themselves. May as well strike now, before they have a chance to kill more of us in our beds!!”

The guests crept up on the pair as they snored gently, taking care not to wake them with loud footfalls. Father Incarnadine was closest, and they most comfortable. It seemed he had been carrying a Pillow around with him for just such an event. A guest stepped forward gingerly, and kept the Father’s head pressed into the pillow for several minutes until he had stopped thrashing.

All the movement had stirred the Lady Lavender awake, and she scooted away towards the stairs before the guests could send her to her own eternal rest. Still, they had obviously done away with one guilty party, so the guests set about finding his belongings.

They were uncovered in the Conservatory, and along with an empty bottle of communion wine there were documents indicating that Father Incarnadine had been on assignment from Opus Dei, tasked with destroying the machine as a tool of the Devil. Nothing in his belongings indicated any sort of murderous capability however, and the guests sighed as they realised they had again killed an innocent.

The clock chimed the hour, it was time to retire for the night. Who knew what the morning would bring?

Any final statements?

lilmookieesquire said @ 5:50am GMT on 2nd Aug
And King P could have saved himself had he voted.
lilmookieesquire said @ 4:23am GMT on 2nd Aug
Meh. Go ahead. I'm going to level with you. I have no new information. I got a KP looks like an investigator and I had an uneasy feeling.

That means my investigations are pretty much bunk.

I could kind of ID you- (remember? That was me that did that)

I no longer have much confidence in my value to the town. It looks like old school investigation (comments/movement/logic)still works best.

I wish I had more to offer.

Do what you think is right.
lilmookieesquire said @ 4:34am GMT on 2nd Aug
I took that to mean he was a third investigator (since the "feeling" was different than previous investigations.) At worst, I thought I could get some conversation going or make the mafia shit bricks.

At least we got one mafia today. Perhaps based on the fact that I knew something I didn't.

I'll tell you what though. Voting for king P sounded reasonable to me. He was quiet the whole game- and frankly that made me suspect him. I didn't actually vote for him on the off chance e was an investigator. (I explained my logic. We needed a mafia kill. Not a big ome, just one.) But I also thought king P might be the god father (like he was before).

At this point, I'm really and truly stymied. At least you can do something about it. That's nice. I can continue to investigate, but I'm not sure what goodbthat will do. The mafia is playing a solid game here.

In the haste to make it up the the bedrooms to barricade themselves in, the guests jostled and pushed each other carelessly.

Lady Lavender, still half asleep and trudging mechanically onwards barely looking where she was going, took an elbow to the face and was sent sprawling backwards. It seemed someone might catch her, but the outstretched hand proved to be too late to stop her tumble down first one flight, then the other.

The fall at the end might not have killed her if she hadn't fallen in such a way as to impale herself on the Icepick hidden within her dress. With a gasp, the Lady closed her eyes and was no more.

After drawing the short straw, one of the guests plodded back downstairs to round up her belongings from the Lounge, but he soon ran back with more energy when he realised who the Lady had really been.

"Look here! It's that international criminal, Carmen Sandiego! Where in the world did she come from?!"

Messages in her pockets revealed she had been conspiring with the other thieves and systematically making her way through the rooms to locate Mr. Black's secret chamber. All those evenings of activity had caught up with the beauty, and it seemed she lacked the energy to make it through one more day. Oh well. At least there was rest for at least one wicked today.
