DeadMau5 or however you spell it, experiments in dubstep

quote [ work in... progress? regress? i dunno. always fun to experiment! ]

That Canadian guy Deadmousey is dabbling in dubstep. Some of it's alright.

Cool, but it just sounds like middle of the road dubstep. Might be better once he carves out his own sound. I think it's interesting to have sites like Soundcloud where the average joe can more easily have a glimpse into an artists mind & musical development.
iqqy said @ 6:36pm GMT on 5th May
Yeah. There are some flashes of brilliance, like the opening to 4 with the deep bass waves. But at the moment perhaps he's too preoccupied with what dubstep should sound like to go his own way and let it flow. But what do I know.
Superchibisan said @ 8:21pm GMT on 5th May
You're exactly right, Deadmau5 has no real talent, just the ability to emulate those who have pioneered before him.
KingPellinore said @ 8:25pm GMT on 5th May
Right, because no artist ever got anywhere doing that as a start...
Chop-Logik said @ 8:27pm GMT on 5th May
Many artists in many genres begin with emulation, and ideally evolve into something new. But I don't think Deadmau5 is shouting from the rooftops about his 'epic new dub5tep track!!'
teknokracy said @ 7:43am GMT on 7th May
Yeah, he's ok... but nothing new.
hildeaux said @ 5:18pm GMT on 5th May
I have never heard of this genre, but I like it and want more. Which artists would you recommend to a total noob?
hildeaux said @ 5:19pm GMT on 5th May
PS, I hear hints of Daft Punk and Justice in there, both of which I already have, so pls suggest other things. :)
aficion said @ 5:31pm GMT on 5th May
I'd say you might want to take a listen to some stuff by Downlink, Cookie Monsta or Datsik. I've heard a couple nice things lately by Bassnectar. Just my taste, which you might not like at all, but it's a starting point! Hope this helps :)

Excision's '08 Shambhala Mix, darker dubstep

Zero 7 - Everything Up (Zizou) Joker & Ginz remix from MIE on Vimeo.

Mt. Eden, Rusko, Emalkay, The Widdler, search em up on youtube. Can't go wrong.
DarkShadowRavenDragonGrrl69 said @ 6:30pm GMT on 5th May
Okay, another question. I remember there being a post about weird Japanese music videos where that Zero 7 song was included. But there was also another music video of some girl beating the crap out of a metal statue. I tried searching for it via "site:sensibleerection.com" but no luck.
Chop-Logik said @ 8:31pm GMT on 5th May

From this post?

DarkShadowRavenDragonGrrl69 said @ 8:53am GMT on 6th May
Yes! Thanks again. Huh, no Zero 7 there. No wonder I couldn't find it.
Superchibisan said @ 8:12pm GMT on 5th May
Joker is mos def Glitch hop/Grime, not dubstep ;)

dub means dub, not heavy basslines :)

+1 for the Excision. Also the '09 Shambala mix is easily found and really awesome (at least for the first 20 minutes where it's super dark and evil-robot.) I listened to this soooo much this winter, also it's a fun one to blow minds with if you have friends that don't listen to much electronic music.

Also check out the record "Extend" by Milanese.

also, also, also.
iqqy said @ 6:48pm GMT on 5th May
I like listening to mixes. You'll find a good one at luvstep.com. Also search for conscious pilot, Ealzee and "I love Dubstep". Dubstep allstars is a good compilation album.
insanemonkey said @ 9:54pm GMT on 5th May
I'd recommend listening to this: Vex'd - Degenerate. They were pretty much the first big names in the scene back in 2007 or so. It doesn't get much better in my opinion.

Also get a hold of Mad Ravers Dancefloor by Goth Trad. He's a Japanese guy that was making dubstep for years before the term was even coined.

What was that French artists name who made the 8-bit dance music? Felt very Streets of Rage-y and I think the track titles were simply different times, like 10:33 or 6:02.
DarkShadowRavenDragonGrrl69 said @ 5:53pm GMT on 5th May
Or 16-bit, I guess.
Chop-Logik said @ 6:12pm GMT on 5th May
That's Danger, and it's fucking badass.

Also check out the Swedish Mille, which is more candy-coated commodore.
DarkShadowRavenDragonGrrl69 said @ 6:23pm GMT on 5th May
Ah yes, thanks! I remember liking the songs when the album trailer was first posted on SE but somehow never got around to getting the album.

I can't help but feel that this guy is only popular because of that mouse mask he wears.
Superchibisan said @ 8:20pm GMT on 5th May
He's popular because he makes really generic music that really generic people (read: the majority) enjoys.

Deadmau5 can go to hell, fucking bandwagon jumper. Dubstep is the electro house of DnB... another genre Deadmau5 is famous for.

Anyways, most of the stuff posted is not really dubstep more closely related to grime and glitch hop.

if you want dubstep, you listen to Burial. You'll find the rest from there.

I know that for me, I just look for music that I enjoy listening to. If there's a label applied to that music, fine, it'll help me find more. Otherwise I don't give a rat's ass what the label is and whether it's correctly applied.

Dubstep: Electronica/drum and bass with better marketing.

Every time someone plays me dubstep, it sounds like someone made a loop in Fruity Loops and then wanked around with Vacuum in Protools.
balzac said @ 9:32pm GMT on 5th May
I would have guessed that this sound was more eclectic than it seems to be.
insanemonkey said @ 10:05pm GMT on 5th May
Dubstep was great for about a month back in 2007. Pretty much everything I've heard since then just sounds like an angry robotic dog having an argument with a liquid drum and bass record that's being played at half speed whilst someone drills a hole in the wall.
insanemonkey said @ 10:06pm GMT on 5th May
Oh and while we're on the soundcloud sharing, have a listen to this. It ain't dubstep but you might like it.

Deadmau5 is okay, but there are plenty of other (better) electronic musicians and DJs out there to listen to, who did what he's doing now, 5 or 10 years ago.
