Facts of Mexico Drugs

quote [ When local police commander Juan José Navarro Rincón and his three colleagues arrived, they saw two men who did not appear to be hurt, removing AK-47 assault rifles and police uniforms from the crashed vehicle to a white Nissan sport utility vehicle (SUV) parked nearby. ]

Some simple facts on the status Mexico and her drugs.

While The Exile has pretty much fallen apart since they were kicked out of Russia, they still publish a semi-regular column on the drug troubles over there. It's pretty fascinating stuff.

Which is in a nutshell why during the 90's I got most of my drugs from across the Canadian border instead of using the southern pipeline sources. Sure I might have paid a little more, but sometimes drama-free peace of mind is worth more than any profit margin.

An interesting article (not too much new information though if you've been paying attention).

I've always been very interested in the drug trade and informal economies. I've been told numerous times by different people that would probably have some clue (like agricultural professors) that my state's biggest cash crop is marijuana.

But I've recently really been curious as to how the slow economy has affected the drug trade and also the drug wars in Mexico. Now that fewer Mexicans are coming here to work, and with fewer oppurtunities in Mexico as well due to the decline in the world economy, how has that affected things in Mexico relating to this turf war? I wonder if there are more people willing to work with the cartels to make a living, I would assume so.

Also, are US citizens spending more or less money on drugs now that the economy has gotten shitty. My guess is more money on the cheaper drugs and less on the more expensive? I really don't know, anyone care to answer?

Also, blackpyspher brings up an interesting point, do people who buy their drugs actually care for the most part about this sort of thing? I don't think much cocaine and heroin comes from Canadia.

Yeah, I have a lot of questions. Not many answers though. And I can't help but feel really sorry for the people living in Mexico who can't seem to change these problems.

The mexican government does not want to change this problems it just wants them controlled.
And yes the lure of the cartels is high, think if you are young and the only option you have is to work for maquilas at 10 x day, and the option of going to the uS and get a job is no longer a relatively easy and inexpensive choice, would a Job that pays you 500 dollars x week, regardless if you "work" or not, carries a gun and gets you the hottest chicks, interest you? Add that to a government that has underfunded schools and a class divide of abysmal proportions, with the richest Man in the world that has openly said that he does not intend to give his money to charity.

what cracks me up is this false notion that the cartels end at the border, sure all that trouble to carry your drugs and money from tijuana to cali, but once you cross the border is no longer any cartel but simple lowly distributors!
another one, that happens both in mexico and the USA and you do not hear much about it, is that even tough most interdictions of drugs are on a small car or a medium size truck with some mariguana or a few bundles of coke, the truth is that coke has been introduced into the US in multiple ways as in containers and whole fucking planes. the last time that someone got caught transporting coke in a 737, the investigations stopped once it was found out that there where ties to the Hank family empire which controls tijuana and cancun, AND THEYRE NOT A CARTEL, but do run the country and their base of power, which is the ATLACOMULCO group is poised to gain the presidency next time around, most likely with american help. And by stopped, i mean in the united states not in mexico.
The "war on drugs" in mexico is a joke as well as it is in the USA. Everyone knows in mexico that the government, and that his sinaloa cartel has not been persecuted as the others, signifyng that the gov. has pick a winner in they're fight against cartels.
the killings come for turf battles. In tijuana, the relative peace has been brought back by eliminating two cartels but letting one survive, as they are now abiding by new rules, among them no kidnaping.
Kidnapping are the result of cartels being deprived of their drug money.

As I understand this, Anglo, but not so far from the border as to be unaware:

A cartel is a major group, a Mafia family.
-Boss + council (Capo) and Family
--Underbosses (+) with territory
--- Local bosses (+)
---- Dealers with networks
----- Dealer/transport support

In an ideal crime world there would only be one Boss. But like all systems there are internal politics and in-fighting for control.

SO - Competing factions/warfare

60b$ is a lot of money.
RedRiverRat said @ 8:32am GMT on 10th Apr
If you take it as a given that drug use/abuse cannot ever be really controlled, re: prohibition (that worked well), would it not make sense to make a partner of the most reasonable drug cartel and support it so that they can use extra-legal methods to curb... enthusiasm... ?

Hudson: Let's just bug out and call it even, OK? What are we talking about this for?
Ripley: I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Hudson: Fuckin' A...
Burke: Ho-ho-hold on, hold on one second. This installation has a substantial dollar value attached to it.
Ripley: They can *bill* me.

4) and enjoy trying to fend off US military supported juantas until your plane mysteriously crashes and you are hunted down and ransomed off by druglord foot soldiers, to you political enemies, so they can torture you to death themselves. on your birthday. At your own party. while they kill your family. and rape your dog. Etc.

Legalizing, regulating, and taxing marijuana in both the US and Mexico would help a lot and would be likely to do very little harm. Unfortunately, the same can not be said of cocaine. It would totally eviscerate the drug trade to do that (opiates supply a minority of their cash flow). But making cocaine even more widely available than it already is would have very unpredictable consequences. And it still might be better than what we do now. But while people can grow their own weed, that isn't practical with cocaine.

Anyone know a country of substantial size and economy where cocaine is legal, regulated and taxed?
