quote [ Gamers4Croydon has hailed the decision by South Australian Attorney-General Michael Atkinson to step down as “fantastic”, as the party nervously waits to find out if it won a Legislative Council seat in the state’s election yesterday. ]

My understanding was that he's resigning, but it takes effect in 2014. |

he is giving up his extra responsibilities as a "front bench" mp and is going to the "back bench" where he doesn't do anything except vote with his party. so he wont be the SA AG and wont be able to block R18+ game classification. |

With luck we can now move beyond the r18+ rating for games issue and onto more important things, like the net filter |

I don't know any SA residents, but I believe another major issue for his 'failure' is that he wanted personal details for online political comments. We already have that here for print media during an election period - once the election is called, you're only allowed to advertise formally for your politics for 30 days. All paid political ads have to have their sponsors announced, and if a private citizen writes into the paper, they need to provide their details to the paper - the idea being that the paper can be requested to prove that the letters are bona fide by being able to confirm who the authors were (the Electoral Commission is in control of this, and they do a pretty good job of being neutral). The papers will usually add the town/suburb of the commentator and can't accept (obvious) false names. This is only for political comments, and outside the 30-day electoral period, this isn't necessary. As I understand it (and I could be very wrong), what Atkinson wanted was for this to transfer online for any political site. There's a major difference between a bona fide newspaper holding people's details, and random yahoo webmasters holding them. Quite happy to be corrected on this, though. |

EPT, you are mostly right. He wanted it to apply for on-line forums, even outside of election periods. Basically you wanted to make a political comment, you had to post your name and post code publicly for all to see. It wasn't just going to be in the hands of the web master, but out there on the end of the post. It was a such a stupid idea, but Atkinson being the Labor right fascist piece of dick cheeze he is, didn't see an issue with it. (Atkinson and Conroy both hail from the same Right wing flavor of the labor party) It was more to do with Atkinson's perceived view that a couple of papers in SA were running a vendetta against him. In SE terms, he was trolled, and had a huge cry. He accused pretty much any post on the papers forum against him as being sock puppets, who were really the papers staff. He proposed the stupid law, and the public jumped on him for it. He got whipped in the polls and barely held *the* safest labor seat in the country, so it was a huge deal. He can rot on the back bench for a couple of years, and with then more than likely announce his retirement for "health" reasons. Good riddance. |
