Nazi philosophy in a nutshell:

"The Jews are an inferior race! We have to kill them because they are better than us at everything!"
Nihil said @ 7:51am GMT on 10th Mar
Mengele was like that, if I remember correctly. He held the idea that Aryans and Jews were the only two "quality peoples" in the world, and saw WW2 as the final battle to decide the winner (Holocaust vs. Jewish Conspiracy).

Mmm, anti-Semitism was part of it, but not all or even most of it. Which is why WWII in Europe was not fought over the Holocaust, it was fought over German expansionism.

Example: Hermann Goering has the prettiest uniform of all the nazi dolls.
Naruki said @ 7:08am GMT on 10th Mar
It's not a matter of laziness: umlauts quite simply have no business in American English. Probably in British English as well, but that's up to the Brits.

yasha said @ 5:56pm GMT on 11th Mar
USA clearly "won" WWII.

for about 300,000 dead USA won the pacific basin, the atlantic and half of europe, and constructed a global commercial system that benefited ourselves and our client-allies-colonies in europe and asia. we also broke an economic depression and trained millions in useful skills. combined these all set the stage for a long boom of prosperity, hegemony, and relative peace that still shows no real sign of being arrested.

the soviets suffered tens of millions of dead and had their industrial base trashed. in return they got half of europe, but no real good way to turn that acquisition to profit.

certainly the russians did far more dying in wwii than the americans. but of course, casualties are actually a metric of FAILURE in war.
azazel said @ 10:00am GMT on 10th Mar
But Göring isn't an English name, it's a German one.
Naruki said @ 11:45am GMT on 10th Mar
Absolutely true, and absolutely irrelevant. Next time you write a Chinese name you will realize what I mean.
azazel said @ 12:51pm GMT on 10th Mar
I disagree - umlauts are hardly the same as hanzi/kanji in that regard, given that they're an orthographical representation of a sound shift, whereas Chinese characters (Hŕnzě) are logograms.
Naruki said @ 1:43pm GMT on 10th Mar
Well, you're right then: you don't realize what I mean. :-)
azazel said @ 2:48pm GMT on 10th Mar
I think I do. I just think you're wrong.
azazel said @ 2:56pm GMT on 10th Mar
Remind me to refresh before replying next time. I thought you were talking about me writing hŕnzě/kanji, not romaji. Fair enough, I see where you're coming from but I still think it's a rather massive difference between the romanization of a logogram compared to a diacritic. After all, English still uses them, e.g. naďve, café, résumé (although the last one might be a tad older?). On that note, coöperation is, albeit archaic, a native English spelling (whereas the French spelling is coopération).
shiney things said @ 6:08pm GMT on 10th Mar
Umlauts aren't on American Keyboards. His point is that while it is possible to html and umlaut into text, for a quick comment there isn't much point.
Naruki said @ 3:53am GMT on 11th Mar
Actually, I meant something else, but your point is also valid.
fhufi said @ 1:23pm GMT on 10th Mar
Your reasoning is faulty. When writing a Chinese name, I am performing a necessary romanization of characters that can't be transcribed directly.
There is a perfect transcription for umlauts, you just choose to ignore it.
Naruki said @ 1:42pm GMT on 10th Mar
Umlauts are not part of standard American English, just as kanji and other character schemes are not. Americans do not use those characters, so we adapt the names to fit our locale. The same as other locales adapt our names to fit.

It can be disturbing to the person whose name is being adapted, but you learn to live with it.

This has little or nothing to do with whether we can pronounce the name, although there is usually a correlation.
BaxtörUK said @ 12:44am GMT on 11th Mar

There is zero reason to believe the owners are white supremacists, and to suggest that is to casually throw out a pretty damn heavy insult. For chrissakes, they lump the Confederates together with the Nazis in the losers' bin of history - Jesse Helms would have had a heart attack.
