I tried to play the Japanese fighting game, but I had no luck getting it to work...anyone have any ideas?

For vanguard princess you have to tell windows to use japanese language for non-unicode programs in the region and language settings under administration.

Also, what version - if any - of MS Office is installed?

The second tab of Regional Options is called Languages, and it has "Supplemental language support" options. The one you probably cannot reach should say "Install files for East Asian languages". I think that one needs to be checked, but I cannot say.

Depending on your answers to the first 2 questions, you may have to download the language pack files.

Yep, I had the same problem - installing east asian language support and then shifting to Japanese for non-unicode problems both had to be done to make it work.

Now I seem to have a fighter game that I can't understand and is in a really strange mix of english and japanese (well, strange to me)

I actually like that: it's how I remember which mode I'm in. It's done it for at least three versions of windows that I've tried, so it seems to be on purpose.

It's standard for Japanese Windows, and it is pretty icky when typing a path or anything else you might need a backslash for.

In DOS I can tolerate it, but in the GUI area it is really distracting.
