Japanese game show fakes sniper attack

quote [ You know what's hilarious? Pretending to kill people so that those who survive the fake attack are forever traumatized! You don't agree? Well, Japanese television audiences do. Hence "Panic Face King" a Japanese hidden camera show that recently used "snipers" to get laughs. ]

Perhaps I shouldn't be surprised, given the source. But it still seems like a pretty fucked up thing to do to someone.

Quoted text is actually from a different article on the same subject.

Don't ask me why I picked that thumb.

ah schadenfreude, my fair weather friend. this was hilarious. i wouldn't feel bad for the guy though, best case he got some money, worst case, he could sue them for money.

Gun atrocities aren't so funny to Americans because they're so commonplace, but I could see the humor to other cultures.

Oh my gosh this clip is so insensitive to all of the victims of sniper crimes. Hurtful feelings are going to be the result of this and we can't have that.

It was quite funny.

But I can't help but see this as, essentially, torture. I mean, it's at least on the same spectrum as water boarding.

HILARIOUS

Not all Japanese viewers find this stuff amusing, btw (my parents think it's ridiculous and offensive, as they do some of the more arcane cuisine that features live flesh). But it seems normal to find extreme reality programming over there. For that matter I've seen european clips that are not that far from this kind of thing.

Maybe japanese residents can correct me on this, but the impression I get is that Japanese victims may appear to be pissed off about it but they generally don't go litigation-happy, claim gross mental distress at a press conference, & devote the rest of their life to taking all of these shows off the air; they might just say 'fuck-off', bitch about the show to friends & family, and go back to work.

fwiw I laughed

It's impossible for me to say this without coming off as judgmental, but... you laughed?

You haven't been shot at, have you?
lilmookieesquire said @ 6:45am GMT on 16th Oct
To be honest, I was more offended that the guy tried to pull a runner without checking if any of those people were alive.
DarkShadowRavenDragonGrrl69 said @ 8:42pm GMT on 16th Oct
I imagine a lot of people would react that way while being shot at.
ckfahrenheit said @ 7:53am GMT on 16th Oct
No, I haven't. Yet. I would shit bricks in his place - at least get close to cardiac arrest anyway. This kind of show really can't be justified for laughs. But I did laugh. The fact that I knew he was *otherwise* untraumatized, plus the laugh track may have mellowed the impact. Perhaps it's because the expression on the guy's face was very similar to a popular face that's been floating around on an imageboard.
lilmookieesquire said @ 6:43am GMT on 16th Oct
My impression is that your impression is correct.

As far as I can tell lawsuits take about 5 to 10 years to process with vague results and very small rewards. It's basically to encourage behind the scene deal making and negotiations.

I imagine they apologized, flattered the guy a lot, maybe cut him a small check and/or took him out for a night on the town. Basically just enough stuff to let him brag enough to make his friends/colleges/etc think he's being an unreasonable asshole if he complains.

But to be honest, I kind of assume he was a little bit in, but didn't know the details, and was hamming it up.

Hmm, a scripted setup hadn't occurred to me.

I once saw a Japanese extreme quiz show that started off with about 25 contestants, goes to a different country each week, and at the end of each show, the weakest one gets booted off. The motivator is, any said booted contestants will have to go through a punishment, always revealed as a surprise for each segment's finale. Could be forced to bungee jump off a 500-foot bridge in New Zealand. Could be locked in a glass aquarium covered in spiders.
When they were in Vegas, the loser guy had to learn how to deal blackjack in a crash course, then is sent with the video crew to deal in a private clubroom. Huge black dude sticks his head out the door, looks left and right with a scowl, and ushers the loser in, but bars the video crew and locks them out. Already the guy is terrified. On hidden camera you see that there's a bunch of mafia-looking characters in there all around him. One gangster keeps losing and gets pissed, inspects the cards, and starts to wonder if the dealer is cheating him. Then he pulls a .45 auto and holds it to the guy's nose while yelling at him. Guy is now scared stiff and starts whimpering "help" in the best Engrish he can manage.
Then everyone cracks up, pats him on the back, and the host runs in with a microphone to interview him. The guy wilts on the table and is almost crying. I'm pretty sure that was NOT set up at all. I guess the relief must feel nice enough that these poor saps are able to be good sports about it.

I feel bad for the guy cause he's obviously terrified, but I laughed. I guess I'm a terrible human being.

PS. I laughed cause I told myself he got money at the end of that.

The main guy is a comedian so it's just typical owarai bullshit... TV in Japan is rife with this stuff... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owarai

I never liked that guy, so it was kind of funny to see him tricked like this.

While it clearly was scripted from the actors' POV, the target was just as clearly not scripted. He was genuinely afraid, although at the back of his mind I'm sure the many, many other times he and his friends have been tricked in such elaborate hoaxes was whispering "it's not real, dumbass".

Having the "terrorists" be other famous talents was supposed to clue him in a bit faster, but he was too afraid to look up.

As he has participated in similar hoaxes on others, I don't have that much sympathy for him.

I miss Japanese variety programs. I wish we could watch them on TV here. It's hard to find for me since my grasp of Japanese was crap when I was living there and it's no better here. I didn't know the names of those shows. Now at least I have Panic Face King! Time to go youtubbing
