New Monkey Island Games

quote [ Look behind you, a three headed monkey ]

After years of denying a new Monkey Island was coming and lot's of speculation; finally a new Monkey Island adventure game IS coming. And (the main link) a faithful remake of Monkey Island 1 is in the works.

The remake of the original Monkey Island 1 is exactly the same game with new voice acting, new graphics, rerecorded music, with even a special mode to switch back to the original 320x240 pixels for the purists.

The new game is created by Telltale Games in cooperation with Lucasarts. It's going to be 5 episodes and will be available for Windows machines and WiiWare. Ready for pre-order and will be coming out beginning of july.

Oh God yes. Thank you. I thought the franchise was dead.

As long as it doesn't follow the sad path of Leisure Suit Larry...

Because episodes don't force you to stake all your money on one throw like full-length games, which is important for putting out small-time nicheware.

Telltale are making them? Ah fuck, their 'sling as much crap at a wall and see how much of it is funny' approach is just about as far from concise Monkey Island brilliance as you can get.

Hopefully the Lucasarts cooperation will consist of locking them in a room while they get on the phone to Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer.
solitude said @ 12:02pm GMT on 2nd Jun
Yeah i know, but the press release did say some stuff about some of the original crew working on it to make it as good as the older ones. So I'm keeping my thumbs crossed for this one. I'll probably buy it no matter what just to complete the collection though :)
DarkShadowRavenDragonGrrl69 said @ 2:02pm GMT on 2nd Jun
Exactly what I was thinking when I heard of this. The new Sam & Max was really hit & miss with their jokes but I still appreciated it as a new entry in the point'n'click adventure genre. Monkey Island on the other hand is my favourite P&C series, they better not fuck this one up.

Slightly off topic, but Guybrush Threepwood's VA writes a food blog at http://www.skilletdoux.com/
Garibaldi Biscuit said @ 1:10pm GMT on 2nd Jun
Huh, I always thought it was Mark-Paul Gosselaar who did Guybrush's voiceover acting, aka Zack from Saved By The Bell, it sounded remarkably similar.

By the by, I'm producing a fan sequel to Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. It's based on Greek epic cycle. I'm approaching it with the attitude that I will put every neat-o thing that a Jones fan would want to do in a retro point-and-click adventure. I'm using AGS. If anyone is interested in doing work on the project, lemme know (especially pixel-art BACKGROUND artists familiar with the original game), doing 100+ rooms is really tough working by yourself :P
Stratafyre said @ 1:11pm GMT on 2nd Jun
Oh man, I'm a terrible pixel artist, but I would totally help with this. I loved that game, up until I had to fight the guy who you couldn't sucker punch :(

That game was fun, it took me forever to beat the game without leaving Sophia Hapgood (was that her name?) to die in the city.
KingPellinore said @ 2:35pm GMT on 2nd Jun
Me, too. I knew it was possible, but it took me forever to figure out just what to do to get that damn necklace off her!

Tirade said @ 5:13pm GMT on 2nd Jun
Is that the one that Mark Lovegrove was designing and writing the music for? I think I had the demo for that one before my harddrive crash.
cb361 said @ 1:54pm GMT on 2nd Jun
I wonder what sort of result you would get if you took a photo, dropped the resolution down to 320x240x256, loaded it into the pixel editor and tidied it up. Or ray-traced an environment and then did the same thing. I guess there's no substitute for original art work.
Hemiii said @ 4:02pm GMT on 2nd Jun
It works really well if you take into account lighting and perspective as you take the photo. Using found photos (Google image search) is pretty uncouth as far as that goes. A couple of my backgrounds have been from photos I've taken. Painting over photos using proper Deluxe-Paint II style gradients is pretty awesome. Getting the Fate of Atlantis art direction style down was difficult, I've been working on it for months, just getting the proper palettes and gradients... those guys were masters.

The only ripped content I'm using are the Jones sprites themselves, which in itself is rather uncouth. But I'm so nostalgic for the sprites I'm willing to overlook it :D
Tirade said @ 4:15pm GMT on 2nd Jun
What about new characters though?
Hemiii said @ 4:39pm GMT on 2nd Jun
Those are all original, only the Jones professor outfit/adventure outfit are ripped. I'll put up a demo sometime soon.
Tirade said @ 4:47pm GMT on 2nd Jun
Awesome. I've dabbled in using AGS before, I know how much work goes into that sort of thing. :) Unfortunately I'm a craptastic artist, so I've stuck to fairly simple stuff so far.

I did make a demo for a RON game a while back. But that used almost no new sprites or backgrounds. Never got around to finishing it, life kinda got in the way.

But I was actually working on a 2d sidescroller spoof of Indiana Jones a while back, so I was trying to get a feel for how to MIDI-ise the John Williams style themes.

Oh yeah, and I've got a good quality microphone, decent voice range. Side effect of being a singer. My acting itself ain't that great, but I can cover ranges all the way from a gruff Batman-ish gravely voice to a decent impersonation of Stitch from Lilo and Stitch.

Meh.

That's funny, I think MI3 is the absolute best animation and art design I've seen in one of these games. Grim Fandango would win, but it's hampered by its simplistic 3D.

While I agree that MI2's art design was limited by the technical limitations of its day, I still think it was better than MI3. It really boils down to a matter of opinion, but I think MI2 represented a very priatey atmosphere that 3 was lacking. Part 4... yeesh. I don't even want to discuss it.

They're all pretty damn good games, though.

The voice of Guybrush is the same one they had for 3 and 4 (I haven't played 4 though.), and I thought he was perfect. Exactly how I would have envisioned Guybrush sounding.

I don't know about the rest of the voices though.

Elaine is at least back to being british. They switched voice actresses between 3 and 4, and the new one didn't bother affecting an accent.

AWESOME. I am especially impressed by the ability to seamlessly switch back and forth between classic and special edition during gameplay.

The swordplay minigame on the site, however, sucks. This one is much better.
Barnabas_Truman said @ 6:21am GMT on 3rd Jun
When I first heard that Telltale Games was making an adventure game of Bone I was quite excited, but it quickly turned into disappointment when I actually played it. There's really no reason for this sort of games to go 3D; it makes the interface needlessly complicated (especially camera controls, if any), and the graphics look worse than the original pixellated cartoons. I'm also getting annoyed at this episodic gaming thing too.
balzac said @ 6:57pm GMT on 3rd Jun
Why the hell would you be annoyed by episodic content? It's clearly superior, especially for niche games like, oh, I dunno, Point and click adventures. No studio would stake a full game budget on things like this, it allows them to make money in a more suitable fashion and pay their own way through development.
Barnabas_Truman said @ 6:52am GMT on 4th Jun
I prefer a complete bundled game.
