quote [ A 7-month-old boy was taken in custody by south German authorities after they found out his parents posted and ad on eBay offering to sell him for one euro ($1.57), The Associated Press reported. ]
Yeah, it probably was a joke. Those cops have no sense of humor. More in extended.

That'll cost her, if not in legal bills then in social standing. Foolish woman, how could she think this would not result in a police visit? Joke or not, there is no way you would get away with it. just more of the 3 ring circus we know as ebay. |

how could she think this would not result in a police visit Maybe she was naive enough to think she lived in a free country. Maybe she thought that in order to draw the ire of the authorities, one actually has to commit a crime. |

Surely the populist impulse among politicians and police services would have seemed inevitable. I take the previous points, and agree with them, but woe betide the state organ that doesn't act upon the seemingly negligent behaviour of people who haven't broken any laws. Unpopular opposition politicians will be sure to take up the cudgels and propose legislation, and shrilly decry any who oppose it as 'not caring for the children'. It's a woeful way to run a parliamentary democracy, but I don't see any other option (other than a well informed and skeptical voting population). |

I'm not too sure of the logic behind this but... thanks? Is this the appropriate response? I'm reading Flowers for Algernon at the moment and it's made me a little self-conscious. |

In my profile, I'm hosting a library of SE avatars from when I come across pics which remind me of our SE neighbors. This one reminded me of you, somehow. Perhaps because you're young (er than me), and more audio engineering and electronica-minded than acoustic instrument-interested when creating music. It seems your passion, being, self-found purpose and quite appropriate to me that you'd be wearing headphones since birth. How's about that? Do I ken you? Much of the work went into finding the right font. |

Also, there's an innocence about you (radioelectric), a gentleness yet stubbornness, which also played into the lightned yet rigid digital font. |

Flattered, then. I'm a bit 50/50 when it comes to music between electroacoustic techniques and traditional acoustic instruments, you probably got the impression I was more into the tech-sided stuff because that's what I've had to work with for my course. I've spent a fair bit of today working at Eric Roche's "Acoustic Guitar Bible" which is a mother of a book. One of the first exercises in it is focusing on Merle Travis style picking with an alternating bassline and it took me a while to get the hang of it. I was surprised I was having trouble with it so early but then that's a kind of picking "pattern" I've never tackled before (good job I bought the book). I might do a bit more acoustic stuff next year where I have free reign over what I do. I'm planning on putting together involving software "reacting" to live instruments. I want to do something exciting and involving, the kind of thing you could take to a school without the kids falling asleep. Anyway, the headphones are very accurate seeing as most of the music tech half of my studies involves composing and without my trusty Equation RP-21s my houstmate would have long-since killed me. Anyway, thanks. |

Perhaps she got exactly what she wanted and isn't so stupid. Even if she says its a joke - if she wanted to get rid of her kid she's managed to do it. Either through the sale on EBAY or the social services taking the kid, she's rid of the kid. And I say, better than leaving the kid in the trash can, like a lot of young german mothers do. All this would n't be necessary with reasonable abortion laws. Abortion in germany is not easy. |

According to my German girlfriend: If you get pregnant in Germany and don't wish to have the child, you first go to a doctor, then a social care office where they tell you all about abortion and of course all about whatever help is available from the government if you choose to keep the child. If you decide to abort the pregnancy anyway, you may then go to the hospital and have it done by a doctor. Between the social consultation and hospital there needs to be at least 3 days of waiting. This should all be done within the first 12 weeks unless the doctors discover the child will be handicapped, in which case an abortion is possible until the 6th month. |

Exceptions are also made in cases of rape or the mother's health. My girlfriend says 3 months is a long time to notice pregnancy. |

Its not just the 12 weeks limit. From what I've heard the social advice comes from a committee which includes the clergy. Apparently it's more social brain washing than advice and that's why young girls don't like it. Most of them have already decided (or have no choice) on abortion. The other problem is anonymity. If the girl is under 18 the doc has to inform the parents. |
