Sensible Gold Rush: Day 3

quote [ Nightmares of gunfire dominated the minds of those squeezed into the Li'l Peter, but those nightmares were not a work of fantasy. ]

The first bullet found was in the chest of jhvh1. He has taken him steamship to faraway lands in an effort to support his wife's fondness for exotic birds, choosing Central California as his nesting place. Now, it was his resting place. He was a townie.

A second bullet was found in the cavity of eightysix. Although he was a barber, his utensils had rusted, and were of no use to steal. He was a townie, who crossed the Pacific to avoid certain Chinese nobles; nobles who had a few bad hair days.

duncs was noticeably absent from the crowd. He had stayed by his tent, attempting to repair a large tear, certainly not caused by natural activity.

Gathering their pans, the community worked its way to the American River. Before they could begin to chase champagne future as and caviar dreams, they had to witness the sight of a dying Southern Belle. sociology_boy, that gentle -- and eligible -- young lady from Georgia, had been daintily shot with a derringer. She, dressed so impecciably in the finest silks and velvet, had a saddle in her hand and a whip in her purse.

She was a cowboy. Her father, who had desperately wanted a son to inherit his lands, taught his daughter to hunt, shoot, and fight. She could easily have held her own out west.

Some stayed by the river to pan. Others went back to help duncs with his tent, or to continue the deceased carpenter's work. Me? I noticed that sociology_boy had some really nice clothes in her belongings...

Thirty nine lines??? no thanks!

Heh.

The perceived difficulty of such a poem is one of the main reasons said poetry contest exists. In a game like this one, an investigation can be extremely valuable to all parties.

So far Graham has voted for eightysix and Todomanna. Both are now dead and both were townies. If that don't stink to high heaven of that yeller-bellied high-falootin' Big Richard fella, I don't know what does.

CONTEST TIME

So, I was umm... Perusing sociology_boy's clothing, and I noticed how feminine they make me look. I mean, the dress, and the gloves and makeup and the hats, look at me boys!

...I mean, that's what I could say were I so inclined. I mean, I'd look so irresistible in that Southern Belle's clothes that I'm sure I could find out anything I wanted.

We're going to earn us sociology_boy's wardrobe and makeup. That item will allow for a one-time investigation into any one person.

Naturally, I'd like to give an item like this away in a poker game; however since we have no cards...

1) Each living person can -- and hopefully will -- attempt to write a sestina. This sestina will posted publicly as a reply to this comment.

*Please do not reply to this comment with anything not a sestina*

2) A private, 3-person voting panel will judge. Those panel members will not include me, and have already been chosen.

The members of the panel will be made public after the prize is given.

3) The winner receives the wardrobe and makeup.

You have until the end of the day. I do hope all remaining players participate. Best of luck.

I am but a simple farmer,
trying my best to keep alive
I till my land and feed my cows
I look across my pitiful field
of corn and think that maybe
I wasn't cut out for this work

But my father struggled in his work,
toiled alone, raised me as a farmer
to think that if he hadn't, maybe
my pa would still be alive
instead of buried out beyond the field
that is tread upon by my cows

There are holes as well, for my cows
that Mexican tracker's handy work
caught him digging in my field
but he wasn't afraid of this old farmer
chasing him, left me unconscious but alive
and ran to his home, wherever that may be

Growing old, I'll die soon maybe
leave my corn and field of cows
to sit and remain as though I'm still alive
maybe someone will find it, and work
to save it, a strong willed farmer
who can spring new life in the field

I've never had much luck in the field
growing crops, could be that maybe
I needed a child of my own, a farmer
to be years from now, to feed the cows
and in time help with harder work
and keep this farm alive

If only my wife were still alive
not with my pa beyond the field
to calm my nerves after a long days work
instead I'm left an angry old man, maybe
all I was ever meant to have were my cows,
my crops, my name, and my job; a farmer

Love and father gone, though I'm alive
to feed the cows and till the field
alone, unqualified, and unable to work.

A burden set upon the town
Dark hearts set upon gold
at first there was no rush
but our lives are not so Sensible
The death of our first lady
has left us low on time

Not that there isn't time
to talk about our town
mate, saved by a lady
last night. Sometimes gold
can blind one's sensib-
ities and send one off in a rush

We are not that different, be we rus
sian, mexican or swede, our pasttime
remains the same in this sensible
place. Friendship, midship, town
ship, and the matter of the gold
A tip of my hat to you m'lady

True, we must hope luck be a lady,
that will let us cut low the brush
so that we may again see gold-
en skies come morning-time.
It's time we talked we town-
ies. Hanging our own isn't sensible.

But what then is sensible
dear gentle men and ladies?
I say we reinvent this town,
take this money here in gold,
help shizac set up shop. In time
gamblers will this place bullrush.

Our dreams have n'er been crush
ed today. Indeed I sense
bleed we will by bedtime
Come forth cowlord and lady
Wrench the prospector's gold
in the name of our fair town

This, our town, cannot be rush
ed for mere gold. Sensible
people, ladies, now is our time.

I remember her sad farewell wave…
As I was sailing out of the Frisco Bay.
Her red-brown hair atop her head in a roll.
Tears stained my eyes as the ship began to buck.
In my chest, my heart felt made of lead.

But, you ask, where does this story lead?
I shall recant the tale, trying to write between each wave.
I arrived in Frisco, a saucy young buck.
I worked lading salt from boats into the loading bay.
At night, there was drinking and dice to roll.
I wasted, on frivolities, every dollar and quarter.

At day-break, I would stumble home to my sad quarters.
I was adrift, with no one to follow and no one to lead.
I ate nothing but water and a stale sourdough roll.
But, then I saw her. Her beauty was like a heat wave.
As she walked through the brothel, men began to catcall and bay.
She was not cheap, only to be had for a sawbuck.

I bought her a dress at Sears and Roebucks.
The money we had stolen, my share was one quarter.
We walked through the woods; I kissed her under a shady old bay.
We chased after the puppy that had broken its lead.
We rolled in the golden grass that the warm breeze made wave.
We laid in the hay and had a good roll.

Had my luck changed? Was I on a roll?
But, the Law was coming, they wanted back their buck.
Hounds and men came in wave after wave.
I knew they would give me no quarter.
I’d get no chance for jail; I would get but a belly full of lead.
So I ran, flight was the only thing to keep death at bay.

I left her on the dock. Her hair a beautiful shade of bay.
And time continues to roll.
Could I change my ways? Find a good life to lead?
Or will I always fight the man; chafe and buck?
I know that if I returned to Frisco, I’d be drawn and quartered.
Or, left to drown amongst the frothy waves.

I shall be judged at the pearly gates, soul exposed and in the buck.
The scroll of my sins shall take days to unroll.
But, for now, I’ll find another whore to occupy this wicked life I lead.

I'm only a player of cards
Thrust into a Sensibly deadly game.
Out west we're on the hunt
for Big Richard and his gang.
Aids and Jew gave us our place,
and now we all must play.

The remaining of those who play
hope to find in their cards,
another day in this game.
The townies are all being hunt-
ed. Good guys should vote as a gang.
What is wrong with this place?

When we arrived at this place
there was a game we wanted to play.
But as if decided by tarot cards
our lives are no longer a game.
We are all a part of the hunt,
each one weary of the gang.

While we don't vote as a gang,
we lose control of this place.
It's the first time most have play-
ed. Just like the first time playing cards,
we don't all understand the game;
making it easier for Big Richard to hunt.

I want to continue the hunt
for the bad man and his gang.
But I'm the minority in this place,
one of the last good guys in play.
Only a player of cards,
I'm going to die soon in this game.

If you're still in the game,
please join me on the hunt
for Big Dick and his gang
before they overrun our place.
We have little time left to play
before we all collapse like a house of cards.

Wherever the cards fall in the game
I wish you all luck in your hunt for the gang.
Restore our Sensible place while you all play sensibly.

The previews do not actually show what will be posted, and weirdness ensued.

When I go to make changes, I type
< a href="entry.php/70632 > Day 1 < /a >

and in the preview the edit page gives me, it works fine.
but once I look at it on the main page, there are two entry.phps

But if I type
< a href="/entry.php/70632 > Day 1 < /a >

It looks fine in both places.

So my knowledge of posting quirks so far is thus:

1. Any extended link will have 'www.sensibleerection.com/' appended to it.

2. If you don't put a '/' in front of an extended link,'www.sensibleerection.com/entry.php/' will be appended to it instead.

3. #2 doesn't show up in the preview page, only on the posted page. #1 shows up on both.

So Day 1 and Day 2 are now linked differently.
