quote [ During the conversation, the man told Arrington that an acquaintance believed she should get a medal and a parade because she had "taken out" a "tree hugger, a bicyclist, a Frenchman and a gay guy all in one shot. ]
I love the way her lawyer tries to tell the judge she is remorseful.
She says she hopes to share her story with MADD. I'd be happy if she just didn't keep drinking and driving.

Although the article infers it, it doesn't record that the Judge specifically said that he was giving her the stiffest penalty because of her callous remarks in private. I would have thought that killing somebody when driving on twice the legal alcohol limit when you've already been disqualified for previous drunk driving would be sufficient on its own. It's difficult to think of a worse example of manslaughter. |

Exactly . . . one factor that the judge may consider is the likelihood of recidivism or reoccurence. Some chick that's apparently *proud* of killing some man is not someone that I'd think will show more restraint or care for others in the future. Part of the reasoning behind jails is that it removes the person from the community, meaning that they are unable to commit further crimes while they are in custody. The other reason, is to cause mental distress and in theory, provoke remorse and a will to amend their ways. I don't agree with prisons as a punishment in general, but given this girl's actions, and the principles of incarceration, I think the judge was correct in giving her an extended sentence, though maybe not one of this duration. |

a good lawyer would have advised her to not talt to anyone and everyone about what happened, particularly on a phone conversation which could be recorded.
