Sensible Howling II - Return to Lupensbrusch - Epilogue
quote [ Sensible Howling II has ended.
The fate of Lupensbrusch lies within. ] Merry Christmas, people. Consider this my gift to everyone.
Sensible Howling 2: Return to Lupensbrusch Epilogue
[mafia game] [by VictorTyne@12:03amGMT] [+10 Good] “…and finally, once and for all, all and for once, for all eternity and so on and et cetera… I, Mayor VictorTyne, will now end the so-called legit masseuse’s reign of terror, fearmongering, and worst chav impression I have ever seen!” The Mayor pulled back the hammer on his pistol and turned to face A Friend, staked out in the town square as the sun began to set. “Have you anything final to say?” “No… please… this is all a big mistake! I…” A Friend’s girlish whimpers and pleadings cut off suddenly. Her voice deepened and her eyes flashed with an evil light as she straightened up as best she could, glaring at the psycho with the gun. “Fool! You’ll never be rid of me! The power of the Face cannot be undone!” “Demon!” Mayor VictorTyne recoiled in horror from the thing tied to the stake. “I shall cast you out with the power of the… of the…” He searched frantically through his pockets for a holy symbol or a phial of blessed water or even one of those stupid little metal fish things people stick to the backs of their horses. Then he remembered he had a gun in his other hand. “…by the power of my gun!” He finished triumphantly, firing a shot through A Friend’s head before turning back to the assembled townsfolk. “I have rid your fair hamlet of the demon which plagued you! Kneel before me and praise my name while making a gift to me of your comeliest maidens and delectable turnip-related confections!” “Wait, what’s that? I’m supposed to help you get rid of Werewolves, not Demons? Damn, that’s like the second time I’ve done that, huh? Okay, so on to the testing then! With the demon masseuse dead, that leaves LoC and M.Sartre on the testing block.” “We’ll kick off this little party by testing LoC the Cultist. How much more obvious could this be? He’s a cultist for crying out loud! I can’t believe it took you people this long to put this guy on the block. Are you people blind, plain stupid, or oh rats it looks like LoC the Cultist is quite Innocent.” “Okay, so we’re down to M.Sartre, our carpenter and perhaps even a Tracker. Well, he can’t be too good if the town wants him up on the block. I suppose it’s an occupational hazard when you publicly claim to be a werewolf tracker. So, let’s get this show on the road.” M.Sartre was dragged into the square and staked down. The testing wand was produced and brandished over the carpenter. His body immediately burst outward as his werewolf form overtook him, snapping the ropes that held him to the ground. “When I kill you,” M.Sartre declared, “the town will make me their hero! The brave werewolf who rid the town of the psychotic killer.” “Yeah, see, I don’t think that’s going to happen.” The Mayor shot back, drawing his weapon. “See, I’ve got the gun, and you’re about to die.” VictorTyne took aim at the werewolf facing him and pulled the trigger. Click. In the heartbeat that followed the jamming of The Mayor’s pistol, M.Sartre leapt onto VictorTyne, sending the weapon spinning from his hand. One massive paw wrapped around The Mayor’s throat, pinning him to the ground. “How does it feel, fool? How does it feel knowing your life is about to end, knowing that you will die a pitiful and lonely Deputy Mayor?” Something deep inside VictorTyne snapped at the mention of his old title. He gritted his teeth, slowly prying the werewolf’s claws from around his neck before flipping M.Sartre onto his back. One hand clamped onto the werewolf’s nose while the other found a hold on his lower jaw. “Don’t you call me that! You hear me?” VictorTyne began slamming the werewolf’s head repeatedly down into the ground. “I. Am. Not. A. Deputy! I. Am. The. Mayor!” And with a final insane yell, VictorTyne heaved upward, tearing M.Sartre’s lupine head in half and spilling his brains out onto the dirt. Mayor VictorTyne calmly laid the broken corpse down and walked over to retrieve his gun, then turned to the assembled town. “The werewolf menace which plagued you is gone. Go now. Live and die in peace.” With those final words, Mayor VictorTyne turned and walked off into the setting of the sun. Winners: Townsfolk Dothedrew, Eru, justus, BlackMage, LoC, TeDDD Sensible Howling 2: Return to Lupensbrusch Epilogue - Alternate Universe Gmg paced back and forth in their little meeting place, wringing her hands. She was very close to tears, but whether they would be tears of grief or tears of fury, she couldn’t say. She continued pacing to the point of wearing a path into the carpet, until her Lover, Nick came through the door, peering out to make sure he wasn’t followed before softly closing and locking the door behind him. Gmg rounded on him immediately, her fists clenched at her sides. “Why did you do it, Nick?” She demanded, the tears running down her face freely now. “You knew she was innocent, didn’t you? You knew she was innocent when you told me to… to…” “Kill her.” Nick finished for her. “Yes, I knew.” “WHY???” Gmg wailed, sick with the knowledge that Snowfox had been innocent when she shot her through the forehead. “I wanted us to be together.” Nick explained, holding out his arms to gmg. “She was… in the way. But now that she’s gone, we can be together.” Gmg just stared at him for a moment, confused. Then understanding slowly spread over her face. She nodded once, accepting her fate, and moved into her Lover’s arms. Nick held her close as they kissed, feeling her body ripple and bulge outward along with his as they both shifted to their werewolf bodies. Nick took a step back, laying a paw on gmg’s shoulder. “Come now, let’s meet the rest of the pack. We have much to do tonight, and soon all this hardship and the persecution we have suffered will be over.” * * * The sun crested the hill overlooking Lupensbrusch the next morning, silhouetting the wolfpack waiting above the town. Daffyduck, Skainsmate, Dismortis, Nibbon, Foobar, and Todomanna all looked at each other, licking their lips in eager anticipation of the slaughter to come. Nick reached out his paw for Gmg, who clasped it firmly in her own as they all looked toward their Pack Alpha, Shiney Things. Shiney Things stepped forward and raised her muzzle, her eerie howl rolling down the hill into the town below. The rest of the pack stepped up, adding their own voices to the song as they loped triumphantly down into Lupensbrusch, claiming the town for their own. Winners: Werewolves Shiney Things (Alpha), Daffyduck, Skainsmate, Dismortis, Nibbon, Foobar, Nick, Todomanna, Gmg The Rules for Sensible Howling 2 The Town is allowed 2 independent tests per day with any werewolves being killed. The Wolves are allowed to convert a Town to their side ONLY if the town did not successfully test a werewolf the day before. Days will last 20 hours, nights will last a further 10 hours. This was later extended to 24 hour days and 12 hour nights for simplicity’s sake. The Roles for Sensible Howling 2 Thorners Dooming Doom, Dothedrew, Jewbacchus, Alacron Alternate Universe: Zelgius, Nibbon, Juju, Misanthrope The Confederacy of the Thorn from the original Sensible Howling made a reappearance. They all knew each other to be innocent at the start and had a discussion forum of their own. Tracker M.Sartre Alternate Universe: Nick The Tracker was the investigative role in the game. He could follow one person each night to determine whether or not they were a werewolf. Alchemist BlackMage Alternate Universe: Kishi The Alchemist was the first of two protective roles. They could inject one person per night with a wolfsbane serum. If that person was bitten during the night, they would not be turned and the werewolf that bit them would die. Martyr DefianceFalcon Alternate Universe: Dismortis The Martyr was the second protective role. The Martyr would choose one person a night to protect. If that person was attacked, they would sacrifice themselves to kill the wolf. The Martyr protection would have superceded the Alchemist protection. Werewolf Hunter Philby Alternate Universe: Gmg The Werewolf Hunter was given a single silver bullet. They could use it to make one kill per game. If a werewolf came to bite them and they still had the bullet, they would kill the wolf instead of being bitten, as happened to Kimota on Night 4. Prostitute Valen85 Alternate Universe: Redemption The Prostitute was a roleblocker intended to skew the chances back toward the wolves a little after the addition of two protector roles. The Prostitute would seduce one person a night. If that person had a night action, they would lose their action. Lone Wolf Badgerbaiter Alternate Universe: Stratafyre The Lone Wolf was a Wolf that would count toward the Wolves’ numbers for the win condition but who did not know the identities of the other wolves, nor did the wolves know about the lone wolf. Matchmaker Philistine Alternate Universe: Assbastard The Matchmaker is one of my favorite roles, because it puts the pressure on two people. On the first day, the Matchmaker chooses two Lovers who will die if the other is killed. Usually a fun little “flavor role”, the Matchmaker and Lovers proved absolutely vital to the win of both games. Lovers Talisan, Badgerbaiter Alternate Universe: Nick, Gmg In the first game, a wolf and a secret wolf were chosen, in the second game two special roles were chosen. Ruleset 1: 21 total players, 3 wolves. 2 independent tests per day, only kill werewolves. Werewolves only convert on a no-kill. Before the game was called, statistical analysis was done to determine the optimal ruleset. These tests were done given straight random chance, i.e. no special roles or the outcomes of the daily discussions were taken into account. Only the chance of picking a werewolf out of the pool of players was analyzed. The original rules called for the wolves to convert one person each night. Given a linked test (only test #2 if #1 is a wolf), 3 independent tests, and a few other rules, the werewolves STILL had close to a 100% win chance because the townies needed a perfect game to net a positive result each night. The “only convert on no-kill” rule brought the chance to 60%/40% (+/- 5%) of winning favoring the wolves. Given the final ruleset, the win chance is independent of the starting numbers. Tests between 100town/3 wolf and 14town/10wolf maintain the 60%wolf/40%town (+/- 5%) win chance. The only factor is the minimum number of wolves needs to be one higher than the number of daily tests to prevent a first-day win. The chance of a second day win (given 21 players, 3 wolves) is actually just slightly more than one in a thousand (0.15%). Special roles were then added, as well as a slight skew to allow for the fact the wolves would have all the information while the town would be playing blind. The latter was harder to account for in the model due to the fact that it required the wolf players to recognize this and take advantage of it right from the start. Roles were added until the win chance was as close to 50/50 as possible. Ruleset 2: 2 Wolf Factions. 40 people signed up on the first day alone, so I went back and looked at the win chances. The win chance started to skew toward 70% Wolf win, but I noticed that a 40-person game would last an average of 60 days. Not wanting to leave anyone out, I split the players into two games. Players would be randomly assigned into games. Random Interesting Factoids In the alternate universe, Redemption was randomly assigned the role of Masseuse (non-legit) and Special Role of Prostitute. The most organized groups in both games were the Thorners. All Thorners had signed on to their respective lists within hours of the games being posted. The Thorner factions in both games were not compromised by the wolves until relatively late in each game. A Friend was the first to hit on the correct scenario in either game. He proposed the idea of people turning into werewolves on Day 2. Dismortis posited the same scenario in the Alternate Universe game only five minutes later. Dismortis had the advantage of his Martyr role to help him to that conclusion. Talisan was unfortunate enough to be randomly assigned the flavor role of “PETA Representative” along with her Alpha Wolf status. People apparently like to pick on PETA Representatives, which caused her death early in the game, depriving the wolves of both their Alpha and an intelligent player. In game 1, the wolves were Talisan, Kimota, Fr3nzy, and Vampire X. Badgerbaiter was the Lone Wolf. The Matchmaker chose Talisan and Badgerbaiter as Lovers. Fr3nzy was cited for non-participation. Suspicion was already cast on Talisan and Kimota while Vampire X was killed. If on Day 2 the townies killed both Talisan and Kimota and Fr3nzy was GM Killed, the Town would have essentially executed a Perfect Game. Instead, talondarkx was turned, then Kimota was killed by the Werewolf Hunter, leaving talondarkx as the only remaining wolf. Talon’s non-participation at that point contributed to the extreme length of the game more than anything else. On Night 8, M.Sartre the tracker tracked Talondarkx on the same night he was killed for failing to send his Bite Vote. This was the first time the town would have definitive proof that the wolves have a night action. M.Sartre chose not to act on this information. Ironically, it was one of the wolves (solitude) that posited this information for the town to think over, but nobody else acted on it either. * * * Awards * * * Most Valuable Player– Shiney Things (For quickly organizing the wolves and leading them to a perfect win.) Cassandra Award – Snowfox (For being right most of the time and having nobody listening to her to the point of a townie shooting her mostly out of spite.) The Invisible Man - DaffyDuck (Wolf from the start, never even suspected until it was too late.) Most Abrasive – A Friend (If there was a Vigilante in that game, A Friend would have died on Day 1.) Final Thoughts My Verdict: This scenario hinges on two things: 1) The town’s ability to figure out the infection scenario and 2) the town’s ability to use changes in voting pattern to spot the wolves among them. All of the town’s special roles were provided clues to determine that the wolves had a nightly infection action, and some of the normals came to that conclusion on their own, but in both games those people were shouted down by the crowd of uninformed (goaded on by the wolves) denying them the chance at re-testing innocents. Furthermore, the most intelligent people were always converted by the wolves. This left the informed minority with the only people capable of appreciating the subtlety of the game while the rest of the people bumbled their way through each day spending more time whining about being bored than trying to figure it out. The townies never formed a coherent strategy, so every innocent went their separate ways allowing them to be easily manipulated by the wolves. I would not recommend running this scenario on SE again, as most people seem to get bored if they’re not spoon-fed the information with a clue-by-four. If anyone wanted to use this scenario, I would recommend 10-15 VIP’s who’ve proven their worth in these games, possibly using sockpuppets to hide their identities. 2 and 0 in Lupensbrusch, baby. In our universe, the wolves could pretty much direct the voting any way they saw fit after a few days of infections. It would have been much more of a whitewash if half of the original wolves hadn't no-showed. To be honest, I wanted to be bitten. The town were aimless, so I came out as the seer to guarantee a free transfer to the winning team. I was shocked that no legit townie realised that the wolves would have no choice but to infect me after that. Oh, and props to the whole pack for their efforts, especially our leader. We kill for shiney things. ;) |

Well, what I learned is that I need to trust my instincts more. I mentioned how you probably would be infected after coming out, but I think I thought it far before I talked about it on the board. And I felt like shiney was definitely a baddie pretty early on, but didn't really press the issue. I think after fucking it up fairly well in the last game (thinking all the good guys were more suspicious than the baddies) I was really reluctant to go on a limb or press the issue. |

Now don't get me wrong victor, I love you, you ran the game beautifully and I applaud your efforts and hope you keep running awesome games like this for the SE community. In my role, as no role, I found this one a little hard to get "into" so to speak. I realize I was self-defeating in that paying little attention to the game led me to not get infected and thus have no special role, but my goodness having not even the threat of being offed at night when you're nothing but "another victim" and having pretty much assumed the infection angle from day one made this game slightly dreary for me. But hey, we won! And I'd like to think I wasn't counter-productive to that end, at least. |

I think that's a reasonable assessment, although it's not limited to just this ruleset—being a regular townie is usually pretty boring. At least in this variation you're not removed from the game when you're attacked. It's a shame that there was so much inactivity this time around. Most of the townie specials didn't really do anything, and even the informed wolves were lackluster at times. That gave the whole thing a bit of a bad feel. This exacerbated the boredom condition, since it seems like townie specials were supposed to make the infection mechanics more obvious but failed in this duty. Perhaps it would've been better to give more clues to the populace at large instead of relying on individuals. I'd also like to speak out against 24 hour days. I understand that they can be necessary (especially in this instance) to keep the length of the day down, but they definitely limit the ability to develop strategies. Most of the time I found myself either voting early—essentially at random—to avoid non-participation or voting late, with the bandwagon, as most of the day occurred while I was either working, sleeping, or not at my computer. Take this with a grain of salt, naturally, as I will admit I'm not the most motivated strategist when it comes to mafia games anyways. Thank you for the game and for trying something new and different, Victor. |

What ended up saving us was the fact that we lost two wolves to non participation on the first day. it meant that there were only two original wolves and that as long as we only converted the already tested, we could basically move about undetected. my favorite part of playing was suggesting that the game worked exactly how i knew it worked and suggesting the wolves could be strategizing exactly what we were strategizing and still having people dismiss my comments. it made me giggle on many occasions. thank you VT for running the game. Also thank you to the active wolves for being really awesome. |

Haha well not that I got a chance to read everything. I will admit I may have committed a small infraction in the rules - one that I believe did not alter the end result of the game - but only altered who are last bite would be. GMG, being my girlfriend, I was the one who wanted her to win with the pack. So I was the one who told her to shoot snowfox so we could bite her the last night (I knew hers and Nick's roles from around day 5 on). I also said to bite nick - the day before he was bitten - and again told GMG to use the bullet on snowfox, mostly because "It doesn't matter now, you may as well use it before the game ends." So of these events the bigger infraction was GMG trusting me to share information of our roles - she knew I was thorner not a wolf. That being said, after I was bitten I continued my case to not retest (which before I was bitten I was beginning to think it was necessary and was close to proposing we retest the two tested on day one - which would have caught a wolf - but of course I had already been bit and did not do this). BTW, I also believe I was the first one to correctly theorize the infection theory in the alternate universe, and not Dismortis. Major props to Shiney though for leading the wolves to the win, an MVP well deserved. |

How exactly is that an infraction in the rules? Well, I guess technically it would go against the "No PM Rules"... But at the same time..... BWAHAHAHA!!! That was my favorite part of the game: Snowfox getting killed by the Werewolf Hunter so Gmg could be turned. |

You really should have given me the power to kill someone at random like you'd joked about. Anyway, I have to say I didn't really like this game. I was just another uninformed townie -- it's like being a bench-warmer, you never really get to play. Also, if the bad guys don't kill me on day one, it is inevitable that my own side will kill me out of spite or ignorance. This is why I vowe to only play on sock puppets from now on (with deliberately altered speech patterns and wildly different strategies). Maybe then I can get some action. |

The funniest thing in my opinion is when I was on the testing block (as alpha) I didn't know badgerbaiter was the lone wolf. We both kept the secret from each other. I remember saying on more than one occasion, they're going to get me, but at least I'll take a townie out with me. And right after our respective deaths were posted, badgerbaiter said to me, "Why didn't you tell me you were into lycanthropy, we could have worked this out?" *giggle* Lovers with nasty secrets aren't going out of fashion anytime soon. |

Hey vic, thanks for that. I did lose interest but I got it back on day 11. Go team townie. You wolves got too defensive at the end there. |

We were very surprised by the way you wouldn't protect the tracker. We thought we'd sacrificed one of us for M.Sartre for sure, but didn't have any other realistic options at that time. So... thanks ;) |

I think that the next day was the day I started caring again. And it was easier for me to just assume that sartre was a bad guy. |

Yep :( Should have kept my mouth shut when Solitude was facing the vote. That said, it was unfortunate that Alacron was smote by the coin. Excellent fun, much moreso as a wolf though. |

Indeed, more's the pity however I never seem to last long without getting investigated or lynched. I'm just looking forward to the one day that I happen to be the bomb. |

I'd like to thank VictorTyne for running what I thought was a great game. It was a bit hard being a plain old townie with no info at all and it's also true that I did lose interest a little in the middle of the game. But I managed to rekindle that interest later on as patterns became more obvious and I was able to start picking werewolves out. You guys should have bitten me sooner. God knows I wanted you to. In the end I had to content myself with being a thorn in the wolves' side. |

I think i got the hang of the game pretty early on. Was starting to see some patterns at least, so I tried to ensure I remained town to the end, by claiming on multiple occasions that I would try to get myself tested regularly to ensure at least one know town remained trustworthy. I had hoped that would make me uninteresting for the wolves, However the last wolf at that point carefully ignored this information and converted me anyway. This cost me in the end. I tried playing as I had before I was turned, but this required me to do some things which would in the end bring me down. I just hoped to turn enough townies before it came to that. Unfortunately Eru came to the right conclusion (for all the wrong reasons) and got some successful bandwagons against the wolves, thus causing our demise. So close, yet so far... I think the form of the earlier mafia games workz better for this type of game on this type of site. However I very much appreciate the effort put into this by VictorTyne. I enjoyed it very much. |

All the challenge of the game was that we didn't know the rules. Now that the rules are known this would play out like any other mafia game. |

I'd like to say that I did not kill snowfox out of spite... I was tricked! I will never love again! Plus I though she is a strong player and so probably would be recruited by the wolves. |

No worries. I take being killed as reassurance someone somewhere thinks I'm dangerous, so I must be doing something right. That said, my usual game strategies had no place at all in this game and are too well-known and well-documented to still be effective. Probably I'll develop another system of looking for and testing targets next game, one that is secretive and not transparent. Anyway, I was no real loss to the town this game. The plain townies were really let down and left out this time around, IMHO. Since we didn't even know the rules all we could do was vote randomly and hope not to be next. Given this, I believe that the only way the town could have realistically won was if we'd lucked into killing a werewolf in the first three days. I realize Victor ran a lot of numbers, but somehow I feel his numbers really fail to take into account how not knowing the rules would fuck the town. |

I think it was more along the lines of "Hey, no one's killed Snowfox yet, we should totally do it!" |

Meh I sort of figured out to rules, but most of the townies seemed more concerned about being killed by the mayor, especially since there was no evidence of wolf night action, so it would have been hard to get anything going. |

I have to say, I like it much better when I know what's going on. It wasn't a bad game, really, but I just didn't care for it. |
