Pirates for Ron Paul!

quote [ Let's bring back the spirit of the privateers. By letting profits and justice once more go hand-in-hand, victims and their champions can have an abundance of both, rather than a paucity of either. ]

Ron Paul (ARRR-Texas) wanted to fight terrorists with privateers (government sponsored pirates). Now with his presidential bid underway, Ron Paul's privateering proposal is being brought up again.

I hearby launch the official "Pirates for Ron Paul" campaign. I doubt the letters of marque and reprisal would really be very effective, I just want privateering to make a comeback.

I hear Hillary was drafting a bill to take out bin Laden with ninjas, but congress totally flipped out about it.

Look at your alternatives:
Clinton
Guiliani
Obama

Hey, I didn't know there were three ways to spell "puppet"...

Sorry, I don't mean to say that Ron is the ideal choice, but sometimes you just gotta make do, y'know?

due?

doo?

Agreed. Say what one will about Ron's policies, he's one of the few candidates who seems equally, if not more, interested in co-operating and listening to the people as he is in using the Presidency to realise his own ideas.

In a direct comparison, I'd prefer Gravel, and I'd be content to see Kucinich win.

Fortunately, even America isn't stupid enough to fall for his crap.
fuzzo said @ 2:38pm GMT on 5th Oct
you mean smart enough to do away with the postal service, securities and exchange commission, department of transportation, center for disease control, environmental protection agency, housing and urban development, veteran's administration, food and drug administration, diplomat corp, and the federal bank?

no i hope we're just stupid enough to keep this out of office.

Given our history of electing people that will do us harm, I wouldn't be surprised if we did.

But I'd hardly call it a smart move.

Nevermind that his campgain funds have increased over ten-fold since early 2007 - his gross contributions have reached almost $9 million with over $5 million currently on-hand. That's money largely from people too - not so much huge lump sums shovelled in from special interests. What does that say?

Alot of people are idiots that do not realize that Ron Paul's policies would go even further to increase the divide between rich and poor?
Xiph0 said @ 5:05pm GMT on 5th Oct
I seem to remember another famous politician who supported privateering.

Captain Morgan was a heck of a guy, too. He was sent back to England to be put on trial for looting Spanish colonies during a time of peace, then after a couple of years they decided to give him a knighthood instead and sent him back home. The Spanish were furious, of course. In his retirement he drank himself to death with rum, appropriately enough, and was given a hero's funeral. If ever there was a guy they needed to make a movie about, it would be him.

Or Sir Francis Drake.

PS--My first post; thank you for being gentle folks.
Azoth said @ 8:43pm GMT on 5th Oct
But seriously folks, does anyone know of any effective employment of something comparable to privateers in the last century? I'm curious if this proposal really stood any likelihood of producing positive results.

Dave Barry suggested replacing the Department of Defense with the Department of Two Large Gentlemen named Victor. When we would have trouble with some foreign shitbag, he would meet them in an Italian restaurant and say something like: "Victors, it would not distress me overmuch if Usama bin Laden suffered a shaving accident resulting in the loss of two-thirds of his head." And just like that, it would happen.

Hey, it makes more sense than, "We're fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them over here."
