SensibleInnsmouth Epilogue - Day 12

quote [ If I am mad, it is mercy! May the gods pity the man who in his callousness can remain sane to the hideous end! ]

The bus out of Newburyport was busier than I had been led to believe, and I had to push my way to the front of the crowd to ensure that I could take my appointed place. When I was safely seated at the back, my mind returned as it always does to Innsmouth, now only a few miles down the coast road.

A married couple occupied the seat in front, and to my satisfaction I saw that the morning newspaper under the gentleman’s arm had a grainy photograph of Arkham Sanitarium on the front page. I didn’t need to read the papers, my sources were far more reliable, but it pleased me to know that news of my exploits was reaching the common herd.

I had hoped to make the Sanitarium a place of serenity and wellbeing, a place where I would cure once and forever the stain of lunacy spreading through the world. Alas, it was not to be. I had spared my Judas, and I had of course received his kiss in return. I thought Doctor Howard was cured, but the seed of his lunacy remained within him and he had spread it among my staff who I had cured with my own hands, turning them against me with his lies. But I had seen more clearly than he knew, the Innsmouth notebooks had foretold the fate of Arkham Sanitarium. There was no point fighting against fate, all that was required of me was a carefully placed oil lamp, and judicious exit, locking the gates after me.

The blaze had been visible for miles, and although well meaning citizens might run hither outside, they were too late. Far too late.

No survivors they said, but Doctor Howard must also have survived, somehow. That was in the journal as well, although I didn’t realise it the time. My mistake was in thinking that my patient’s stories were from the past, an assumption of two-dimensional thinking.

Oh yes, Doctor Howard would have survived. On our final meeting I had dubbed him The Great Yam Heist, and told him that I would hunt him down in Innsmouth. He would be there, for certain, the murderer spreading his lies. I wonder what goes on his head; perhaps he believes our roles are reversed and that he is hunting me. An amusing notion, but there’s no accounting for sanity.

I stared at the young bus driver for quite some time, as he chatted to some housewife or other, her lap laden with groceries. dualscimitars didn’t look as had been described to me, but that was no doubt all part of his fishy disguise. This time he wouldn’t have the chance to escape Innsmouth for the welcoming abyss, I would see to that.

The bus was filling up now, but I resisted the temptation to start trying to pick out the Deep Ones that I knew must be among us. There would be time enough for that when we reached Innsmouth. The future had been vouchsafed, and I knew that I would prevail in my endeavour.

The young wife in front of me was reading something, and I bent my neck to see the title of the novel. ‘At the Mountains of Sensibility; 2008’. I wondered briefly what it meant, and dismissed it. What cared I for another’s jottings, when I was making history in the flesh?

My own journal was lost in the blaze, but I remember each word I had written in it. For this journey, though, I had furnished myself with a notepad to record my experiences. I licked my pencil, and smiled, and then began to write.

We left Newburyport and the day was warm
and sunny, but the landscape of sand and sedge-grass, and stunted shrubbery became more and desolate as we proceeded. Once in a while I noticed dead stumps and crumbling foundation-walls above the drifting sand. This was once a fertile and thickly-settled countryside, and the change was thought by simple folk to have a dark connection with hidden forces of evil…

Men of broader intellect know that there is no sharp distinction betwixt the real and the unreal...

My Mistakes :

I forgot to tell Thumble that he was xenophobic, leading to accusations of shenanigans.

qtemo should have stolen the tiara from rash1 at the end of the game.

DefianceFalcon said @ 1:05pm GMT on 27th Sep
Wait, still confused:
I thought people were only allowed one Action per Night, and the Hot Potato specifically states no other actions, but you've got The Cooler passing the Potato and protecting on Night 1, and qtemo is listed as using the Token and performing two robberies on Night 2.
And what was up with the Tiara? rash1 apparently won the clusterfuck at Yam's place on Night 3. But then three attempts to steal from rash1 don't get it (me & qtemo on Night 6, Dooming_Doom on Night 8).
rash1 said @ 3:22pm GMT on 27th Sep
Pfft. That's what bribes are for.
cb361 said @ 8:31pm GMT on 27th Sep
These are the requests that players submitted, not the action that was necessarily performed.

But I think that close to the beginning I forgot that players can't pass on the Potato and perform an action. Dismortis should have died protecting CapnSilver on Night 1, because TheCooler had his hands full.

Who stole the tiara was decided by random.org

I made a mistake with the tiara on the last night, so as far as I am concerned, qtemo and rash1 both fulfilled their quest.

Some quests were easy, whereas others were almost impossible, so it isn't a competitive thing. Just something to add a bit of personal fun.

There was a lot of experimental stuff in this game. I would love to know what people thought worked well and what didn't work.

The whole Lone Deep One/Sleeper thing in particular turned out to be far more difficult for the players than I had anticipated, and Eru was the only player to claw his way into the Deep One Inner Circle.
Philistine said @ 12:25pm GMT on 27th Sep
A great game! The days felt a litttle long sometimes, and as a sleeper/dreamer, I had no idea how I would have even begun to make my way into the inner circle, had my investigation gone the other way, but it meant that I could play a townie convincingly.

Your write-ups added an incredible amount of atmosphere to the game. The hot potato conclusion, and the final day made for fantastic reads. Many thanks again for your, and eighty sixes efforts.

Oh, when eightysix gets here, can we have a the clue solutions please? I missed the chicken bones and the unicursal one (twice!) :(
justus said @ 1:15pm GMT on 27th Sep
I liked the PQ system as it gave people a reason to play beyond just trying to lynch intelligently. I do wish there had been more tangible rewards, however, and like I said before, I wish they had been somewhat more consistent with the rest of the game (being a Sleeper and having a PQ to keep a townie alive was a downer). I understand that they were mostly random, of course, so it doesn't bother me too much.

The variety of items was nice, too. My only request there would be to have made it easier for players without special powers to acquire them, possibly through some sort of use-it-or-lose-it clause. As it was, a lot of the cooler items were essentially hoarded until the end of the game.

Investigatory powers would've helped the Lone Deep One role, yeah. I had assumed that my PQ was supposed to be a hint so as to make it more reasonable, so that would also have been an option for those players. It would've been more fun if jadedobelisk hadn't been an uncanny fish-sensing destroyer, too.

Overall, I enjoyed the game; your prose really livened up the experience. Thank you guys for all the effort you put into it.
Eru said @ 4:51pm GMT on 27th Sep
And I wouldn't have been able to do that if I hadn't gotten the talisman from Capnsilver. Twice.

Lone Deep One was a bastard of a role to play, how to look suspicious without getting yourself killed.
qtemo said @ 7:38pm GMT on 27th Sep
Look suspicious with out getting killed? I could teach a course in that.
DirtyBirdy said @ 5:43pm GMT on 27th Sep
lone deep one / sleeper thing could be tweaked a bit ... maybe with lone deep one investigations, maybe by having lone ones only sort of lone, put them in pairs possibly

I liked the concept of the cryptograms, etc. but the timing necessity of it killed it for people besides the early ones.

The Hot Potato was nice

personal quests were good... I put some thought into trying to fulfill mine, but didn't want to risk being exposed, as I figured verycleanteeth was probably a person.

Deep One's limited investigations were useful, but some way to find the masons would have been good.

-_- said @ 9:29pm GMT on 27th Sep
I really liked the items .. expect to see some variations on the theme in Sensible Sunnydale.
*chortle*
cb361 said @ 11:52pm GMT on 27th Sep
The objects allowed a few different subgames, like the Talisman or the Potato, but I think that the main purpose of items was so that any player would have at least the opportunity to wield a bit of power, sometime in the game. I hated being allocated a powerless town role at the start of the game, and knowing that I couldn't do anything but talk for the rest of the game.

If I did this again, I think I would allow a small number of items but make every player a thief.
DirtyBirdy said @ 11:36am GMT on 27th Sep
Thanks, that was fun!

We'd have probably fared better as Deep ones had we had a better way of getting the lone one in -- but we couldn't come up with any way to initiate contact with the right group of people. (and when we found a sleeper by investigation they went and killed themself!)
cb361 said @ 11:39am GMT on 27th Sep
I should have allowed the Lone Deep Ones to perform Investigations, to give them a fighting chance. But by the time I realised what a tough job they had, the game had started and it was too late to alter things.
Eru said @ 4:54pm GMT on 27th Sep [Score:1 Insightful]
What you guys should have done was this...

A split second after the lynch one of you comes out and says "I'm a deep one, lone deep ones contact me tonight." Of course that person would die during the night, but you'd likely have gotten 5 new members.
sythe said @ 5:03pm GMT on 27th Sep
Bingo.
DirtyBirdy said @ 5:33pm GMT on 27th Sep
I thought about it, but then also figured that if someone did that and I was a lone deep one I'd take it as a trick.

Of course, if you made it through the night, it would be easy to get a bonus kill out of it by saying that Mr. X attempted contact. When Mr. X is killed and shows up to be a townie, then it's all over.
sythe said @ 5:41pm GMT on 27th Sep
With the vigilante around, it was a pretty safe bet that you'd not have made it through the night. The flipside of that being that it'd be pretty random for a townie to independently try and trick all the lone deep ones by doing that. Now a mason on the other hand....

The Cryptonomicon of Abdul Al'Eightysix

AJMUHQ PQJ UCCN CY PQJ PQTUX GJDJG CV PQJ GTOQPQCKAJ - Dark-light Camera

This is a simple substitution cypher that a lot of people submitted the answer to within hours of the post going up.

PQJ appears twice, and one may logically deduce that it can be decrypted to THE

?E???H THE ???? ?? THE TH??? ?E?E? ?? THE ???HT?H???E

CY and CV could be, in the English language, the following: an, as, at, ax, be, do, by, do, if, in, me, my, no, of, on. As it precedes THE in both instances, one narrows this down to as, at, be, by, do, if, in, of, on. In this case, it was ON and OF.

?E???H THE ?OO? ON THE TH??? ?E?E? OF THE ???HT?HO??E

The palindrome is a rare occurrence in the English language. GDJDG decrypts to LEVEL.

?E???H THE ?OO? ON THE TH??? LEVEL OF THE L??HT?HO??E

L??HTHO??E is of course, LIGHTHOUSE. By this point, the answer to this cypher should begin to become clear.

SE???H THE ?OO? ON THE THI?? LEVEL OF THE LIGHTHOUSE

The thi?? level? Surely one must surmise that we are referring to the third level.

SE?R?H THE ROO? ON THE THIRD LEVEL OF THE LIGHTHOUSE

SE?R?H can only be search, but possibilities for ROO? are ROOM and ROOK, as F is already decrypted. I'd imagine more people would search a ROOM than a ROOK, though. And so the answer that should have been sent in (by Aidentas who was choosing between solving this and sleeping) was:

SEARCH THE ROOM ON THE THIRD LEVEL OF THE LIGHTHOUSE

TTDDH ITRFN IHEAA AOOOL SERGL and OHSHI IHWHH OTUTF KEETS LNOIE - Gold and Silver, Father Da--- and Mother Hy---.

The answer to these were partly dependent on the keys which were Dagon and Hydra. A simple cursory inspection of the first line of cyphertext would reveal that DAGON was present in the first one in order allowing one to solve it very quickly, but methods exist for solving it even if it were not.

Firstly, number the blocks from 1 to 5. (Unsure how to use a fixed width font)

TTDDH -1
ITRFN -2
IHEAA -3
AOOOL -4
SERGL -5

Supposing DAGON=12345, arranging these letters alphabetically would make the number order 21354. One needs only to arrange the cyphertext in this order and read vertically.

ITRFN -2
TTDDH -1
IHEAA -3
SERGL -5
AOOOL -4

ITISATTHEORDEROFDAGONHALL. Insert spaces and that's where you'll find the gold coin.

IT IS AT THE ORDER OF DAGON HALL.

OHSHI IHWHH OTUTF KEETS LNOIE can be solved using the same method, Hydra if numbered and rearranged as described above, is 35241. However, in this cypher, you arrange it in numerical order.

LOOKINTHEHOUSEWITHTHEFISH. If you asked me what I was referring to, I have to admit, I don't rightly know. The silver token was there though.

LOOK IN THE HOUSE WITH THE FISH.

Philistine found the Gold Coin, and qtemo, the Silver Token.

8.15.110.63.132.247.306.95.115.174 - The Grimoire of Abdul Al'Hazred

This was one that nobody solved. I had actually changed the font colour of this one in my profile to #235711 after 2 days to see if anyone could use that as a clue. The key to solving it was to use ascending prime numbers (2, 3, 5, 7, 11 ...) Divide the numbers in the cypher by these numbers.

8/2=4, 15/3=5 and so on..

4.5.22.9.12.19.18.5.5.6

This can be assigned alphabets. 4=D, 5=E, ... Which provides us with

DEVILSREEF (I loved this object, and I was disappointed that noone got it, though I only have myself to blame. I wonder which ability would have been used.)

Regarding the chicken bones in the gew gaw boxes, you have known the answer from the first day. Today, it is staring you in the face.

Look to the right a bit of Cthulhu's tentacle. I meant it when I said it was staring you in the face. I made the font colour of this #006686 in my profile, too. And of course, my profile number was 6686, a page we've been linking to since Day 01.

Masons Equinophobe, Alacron and gmg got the bones, but the story behind the use of the bones is very interesting one.

Other solutions coming soon.

In case my respect isn't obvious ...

GREAT GAME GM's YOU REALLY RAISED THE BAR!!

GREAT GAME PLAYERS TOO!!

This was the game that told me we really have something amazing coming together here on SE ... all those poor people over at mafiascum that think a 20 player game is unmanageable don't know what they're missing... but let's not tell them yet.

Thanks, and it's a testament to this community that can hold six-week games together.

Fifty-four players were a few too many, though. I would like to see large games, with smaller ones like yours starting about halfway through to give the players who have been killed off early something to do.

Actually what I would like would be to find a way to allow the dead player to continue participating, but I haven't thought of an elegant way to do it.

Remember way back when I said that I'd learned a game this big is hard?
Well, yeah.

They get a lot easier to manage if you can find a way to kill everyone at once. :)

I think I have a way to play this where the dead can keep participating... I'm working on a concept for two different games right now... I just need to separate the features into two different categories.

I know it's been said by almost everyone already, but seriously, it was an awesome game. Great job guys, I had loads of fun.

Awesome guys, absolutely awesome.
One small gripe looking at it the events of Night 9 though, I wasn't informed I'd been investigated, which I thought you were if you were a sleeper/dreamer so you knew what side you were on at last. A small thing, but it may have saved our Masonic Knife user from death. At least from using it on me anyway.

So how long till the next one?

An absolutely wonderful game, the story text in every post and interacting with everyone in this deadly game of cat and also cat.

You did some serous work on this cb361 and eightysix

so I propose three (or more) cheers for the numbers who ran this complected and detailed game so well.

Also this is the first game I've survived to the end it is a good feeling.
