Sensible Seamen Day 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales

The remaining crewmen slept fitfully, their meager craft bobbing heartily in the ocean’s waves.

They awoke to find no dried out husks, no garroted mates, and no horrible fish-related accidents. In fact, things seemed to be going quite well, as well as things can go when you’re stranded in a small rickety lifeboat in the ocean with a dead body and someone who wants you dead that is. Dioxin hadn’t made it through the night. Someone had slit his throat from ear to ear. His blood covered the floor of the boat.

At least CapnSilver had woken up at some point in the night. Unfortunately for him, with only four crewmen left, it didn’t look like anyone was going to trust him with the big decision this time around.

OOC: That’s right, vote switching ain’t happening anymore. Also, I don’t think you need me to tell you that Dioxin was a watchman, but I will anyway.

Oh, and a bit of advice I forgot to mention in yesterday’s post: Don’t listen to badgerbaiter, he’s a friggin’ nutcase.

I would rather people chose something without slimy monsters or magic. Eightysix and I have been putting a lot of effort into back story and setting for a Lovecraft themed game which is likely to play out quite differently from previous Mafia games on SE. We've been developing and balancing the rules for a couple of weeks but it's not finished yet, so even though The Thing would be a good theme, I beg you not to steal our gibbering slimy thunder. Jedi would work well, as would something themed on the Orient Express.

Eightysix and I have been developing ideas for Sensible Innsmouth for the past few weeks, and I think that we're on track to producing the best game yet by far. But it's not finished yet and it sounds as though Pirates only has a day to run, so I'm not quite sure what to do.

Okay, so, I'm not a badguy, and one of you three is.

There is one chance to do this right because otherwise we are fucked. We lynch incorrectly then it's 2-1. There's a night kill which brings it to 1-1 and then it's failure team crewman.

I have two plans. The first is a little extreme but hear me out. endopol votes verycleanteeth. verycleanteeth votes for penisinface and penisinface votes for endopol. I go no vote or even hover about to make sure there's no last minute tomfoolery because I'm unemployed enough to do so.

The second plan; you all role reveal and we'll take it from there.

Ah hell... I figured Dioxin would be the one to die last night. He could've narrowed our choice down.

Here are some voting histories, for each of us, to help us make our decision. Listed alphabetically from Day 1 onward:

-endopol spent almost the entire game suspiciously quiet.

I've made my choice.

Every one of us except for endopol switched our votes multiple times. How could endopol be so sure of himself everytime?

All of us except endopol voted for a pirate in one way or another (because of vote switching on day 2 my vote for sociology_boy was really a vote for kishi).

endopol has voted for watchman Dioxin, and was gunning for the capn the past 2 days.

I smell a pirate.

I've been lazy in this game, and I honestly didn't think it would come down to just us four. Sara will kick my ass if I let this one go, though.

the rationale for my first three votes was a little simplistic, my attitude a little detached and exploratory.
Dioxin advanced the option of not lynching, a strategy which I'm pretty sure would have favored the pirates, so I stuck to that lead. That he turned out to be the watchman, nobody (pirate or otherwise) could have anticipated, least so in the first two days.

The captain has been an odd character, to say the least, but it looks, for now, that he's on the side of the honest crewmen, at least w/r/t win conditions. With a bigger crew, I'd be harder on him.

Of my three mates left on the lifeboat, I've observed that once verycleanteeth cast his vote, penisinface settled down, unwilling to make waves, casting his vote as an afterthought, like someone with time on his side.

I know it's ironic and self-serving coming from me, but I think now is the time to start making waves.

I'm not crazy, seriously, if you take everything I've said on face value (which you should) and put yourself in my position, wtf do you do? It's far too outlandish to be a lie.

So, penisface, you think I'm a badguy because of what? Almost being killed after the vote wasn't swapped on a pirate? think about it for half a second.

Personally I'd like to hear what endopol has to say before voting for him, finding out he's a crewmember and then LOSING. We get this wrong and we LOSE so you both better be abso-fucking-lutely sure about endopol

Well, if you voted penisinface, that would tie the vote, meaning a double lynch, as long as no one switches at the last minute, which is a big danger. If it worked it would mean certain victory for the crewsman though.

I'm certain you're not pirate now. If you were, you would have jumped all over my endopol vote quickly like penisinface did. Your hesitation exonerates you in my mind.

I still think endopol is the pirate, but I could be wrong, which would mean it's penisinface.

End of Day 5

Here’s how it could have ended:

Their minds made up, the remaining crew members grabbed a hold of one of their crewmen and threw him overboard. Their troubles at an end, the crew lay back to log one last night’s rest before the row home.

CapnSilver would awake the next morning to the barrel of his own gun, one of his crewmen dead beside him.

Days later, their little lifeboat would be found drifting in the harbor, the flies having beaten their countrymen to the discovery. All that would remain of the stalwart crew of the SSE Dirty Doubloon would be the bloated bodies of CapnSilver and verycleanteeth.

Luckily for the crew, that’s not what happened.

Though quiet in life, endopol was loud in death. Cursing his crewmates and screaming his innocence to the heavens, endopol fought till the end, the end being a few short moments later when he was thrown bodily from the boat. Sitting calmly, watching as verycleanteeth and penisinface did the dirty work, CapnSilver quietly pulled out his pistol and shot penisinface the Pirate in the back of the head.

Several days later CapnSilver and verycleanteeth, the sole survivors of the cursed SSE Dirty Doubloon, rowed into harbor. Although the mission was technically a success, The Captain was stripped of his command and sentenced to work on an arctic fishing boat for the rest of his days. The lowly deck hand, however, had a very bright future ahead of him in her majesty’s navy. When he finally died of sex-related exhaustion at the ripe-old age of 85, verycleanteeth had lived a long and fulfilling life.

Yar, I not only was an ass-pirate, but a REAL pirate as well! I fooled ye all until that last day, when suspicions arose. I was prepared to smooth-talk my way out of them, but I had a date with some TNT instead. T'was a good game, though! Needless to say, those 72 virgins are fairly adept now, and thanks to the lack of the male refractory period in heaven, I'm still ready and raring to teach them more in the ways of sweet pirate lovin'!

This was their role PM:
All Hail Poseidon! You are a Follower of Poseidon! The crew doesn’t know you’re aboard yet, but they will when you make your first kill. You three are some of the last representatives of a very small, and very crazy, offshoot sect born in ancient Greece. Though your sect used to be thousands strong, your numbers have dwindled over the generations. You believe that no man is fit to sail the seven seas and all who dare to must be sacrificed to Poseidon’s glory. ALL non-believers must lie at the bottom of the sea before you can rest. You will be allowed to kill one player every OTHER night, starting with Night 1. (i.e. Night 1, Night 3, Night 5, etc.)

The Followers were originally designed to kill only once every other night until one of them was uncovered. Depending on how you look at it, you all were either very lucky or very unlucky that Narrenschiff was killed on the first night. His death trigged the “powerup” ability of the Followers and allowed them to kill every night, but did cut their number by a third.

The Captain
….well, you weren’t supposed to know about The Captain’s connections with the pirates, at least not straight out, but CapnSilver couldn’t read my instructions apparently. If I hadn’t put him into the game to give The Pirates a little edge I’d have smited his ass the minute he came out to you all. Luckily he, for no apparent reason whatsoever, decided to switch the vote the first night so lots of you didn’t believe him. To be clear, he was a crewman, but the pirates could force him to switch the lynch through me (they couldn’t stop him from switching it though.) What happened to knock him unconscious you ask? Well, he disobeyed their orders, so they auto-killed him. Unfortunately for everyone not named CapnSilver, DeadCarbonCopy not only chose to try and protect him that night, but actually succeeded. At that point, I admit I was just making things up for the captain, as I really hadn’t foreseen that particular combination of events. I considered having his death be unprotectable, but thought the situation was too unique to just do that (plus I’d given no in game indication that he’d be autokilled.) So his 1-day disabling came out of that. Granted, I might have done things a little differently had I known that the next day would go as it did, but oh well.

The Disgruntled Crewman I know you all are probably wondering what exactly was going on with wee badgerbaiter. The exploding mast was indeed him, reminding you all that he was still around (didn’t figure he’d go an blow everyone to hell the same day.) I have to say that a number of your theories on the 11-9 thing were pretty entertaining, and remarkably complex. Here’s the message badgerbaiter received at the beginning of the game:

You are the first mate, but you should have been the captain of this ship. That louse isn’t fit for command and was only given the job because he’s been sleeping with the Prince and the Queen needed that little embarrassment out of the way. That son of a bitch is going to pay and so will anyone else who stands in your way. You don’t want to destroy this pretty ship, but you won’t leave it in the hands of any of this lot. So you’ve set some barrels of TNT up in your quarters and you know how to use them. If people want you dead, then there is a good chance that you’ll take everyone in line to kill you down with you. You’re not a killer at heart though and this sure is a beautiful ship. It could be yours but your competition has to go before you can seize control. Unfortunately your attitude hasn’t exactly endeared you to the crew so that list is pretty long. If enough of them were out of the way however….
You will win if you’re still alive when all of the following roles have been eliminated: The Captain, The Quartermaster, The Bodyguard, The Watch (all 3, but not Bertus), The Doctor, The Medics (all 3), The Ghost, The Pirate King (and at least half his men), and the 3 Followers. If you take them all down with you in a giant pillar of fire, well, not only will that be funny, but that might win you the game too. It would be best for you if you would refrain from sharing this knowledge with others, if you know what’s good for you that is….

…so…yeah… in retrospect, he probably should have been a 50% kill chance or something, but this way was a hell of a lot more entertaining.

Quick game's a good game I say. But I'd argue in favour of simplicity for future reference. If you want more kills per cycle then make it x% of remaining players die from lynch vote during the day, and/or the amount of kills the "bad guys" make at night is directly proportionate to how many of them are left.

All these extra roles are fun but a bit too much to handle.
