So you’re new to “Mafia”? Well, the first and best bit of advice I can give you is DON’T TRUST ANYONE. Everyone lies in this game and everyone wants you dead. Everyone.

Mafiascum.net is an excellent source of information about the game. They’ve got an active forum on the site, and they’ve got a decent wiki set up for new players.

Watchlist your games' posts!
Not only does this make sense in terms of easy access later, watchlisting posts will make new posts highlighted for you every visit. When the message count gets up beyond 300 600 that'll come in real handy let me tell you.

Pay serious consideration to the timezone the game you're playing is in.
If important game events are scheduled for a time when you're meant to be asleep, you'll eventually have to choose between structuring an entire month of your life around a PBEM game, dropping out, or being killed in your sleep.

We all know that Eastern Standard Tribe is little more than a gigantic rant about DRM and corporations, but the points it makes about living in another timezone fucking you up are really quite valid.

Useful tools

cb361 has a wonderful voting script in his profile. Scroll down if you have to to find it. He's got install instructions in there too, but Cb361, me, or most other veterans are more than willing to troubleshoot if you need it.

Sensible Facial
Another great script that changes a lot about the look and feel of the site. After you install it, when you watchlist posts you'll be able to cycle through just the new comments using arrows in the bottom right. Very useful in those 500+ comment posts.

SE-Specific rules and regulations
sythe said @ 11:37pm GMT on 22nd Aug
No player should private message any other player unless they are expressly allowed to by the GM.
sythe said @ 12:00am GMT on 23rd Aug
"Days" take place in the main post. Comments inside that post are the days discussion. There are often one or more groups that have a separate, secret, place to talk to one another at any time, usually a google group.
sythe said @ 12:01am GMT on 23rd Aug
The precise wording of Role PMs should not be shared with the group at large. You may state your role (or claim to have another) but you should never quote that PM directly.
sythe said @ 6:32pm GMT on 23rd Aug
Lynch votes should be places as replies to the GM's voting thread, using tags to bold the name of the person you're voting for.

Occasionally you may see someone make reference to someone "pulling a _____" with a particular member of SE named in the phrase. I'll try and compile the ones we've seen most frequently here.

A VictorTyne
VictorTyne was assigned a mobster role in Sensible Sopranos. Early in the game he claimed to be an investigator and said he'd found a mobster, madlobster. The town went ahead and lynched madlobster and sure enough he was a mobster. The problem was, VictorTyne had never asked permission to sacrifice him and the rest of the mob had no idea what he was doing. There was frustration all around. This phrase can refer to either a bad guy pretending to be a cop or a player turning on his teamates.

A -_- aka "A Face"
In the Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep game, -_- took the possibility of a cult very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that he ranted and raved about it for a very extended period of time. Having had enough, GM Narrenschiff stepped in and made it clear to the town that the cult wasn't what it had been suggested to be. -_- took offense to the GM playing such a definitive role in the game and said as much, loudly. It had a really rough effect on the game and eventually got him smited by the GM. This phrase has been used to refer to calling the wrath of the GM upon you, or to going apeshit and making everyone suspect you for no apparent reason.

A badgerbaiter
badgerbaiter played the role of a nuke in the Sensible Seamen game. Through his maneuvering badgerbaiter blew a hole right through the magnificent SSE Dirty Doubloon and managed to take 23 other players with him, a current SE record. This phrase is generally used to refer to someone acting like a nuke might.

An Assbastard
In Sensible Hollywood assbastard played the role of Jack. He betrayed his SAG teammates and exposed them to the Producers, eventually leading to the death of all of the SAGs and a Producer win. Used to refer to a "spy" like player who may turn on his fellows at any time.

*See any game any of these people has ever played in.
A player who, by their very existence, is suspicious as hell. These people just can't help it, it's in their nature to seem like bad guys no matter their role.

A Sgt. Snapper
A player very obviously on the side of the "innocents" (townies, normals, etc) who commits suicide by asking to be lynched with the expectation that people will assume anyone offering themselves for lynching has nothing to hide instead of figuring that everyone will jump on the bandwagon and have him lynched even though the people voting are sure of his innocence.
In Sgt. Snapper's case, he kick-started the bandwagon by voting for himself.

A Yam Heist
In Sensible Innsmouth The Great Yam Heist was assigned the role of the serial killer. He was outed early on in the game and offered to kill for the town in exchange for not being lynched. Short hand for a "pet" serial killer.

There is also a growing litany of meta-game references. I don't think I can keep up with them all, but here are some:

In Sensible Épicerie lilmookieesquire thought he was on to something when he saw juju use the word "toasting" during the previous day. Unfortunately for lilmookie...well, read for yourself

The Ostrich (or "Tonight YOU")

First posted in a mafia thread by cb361 here, the ostrich is either a reference to an illogical argument that is held over and over again, or a not so veiled threat. Recently it has been trying to evolve into a mascot instead.
