quote [ i'm going to have a rant.. - matt ]
After digging around this old web of ours because of this post, I figured I would dig around a little more to see what I could find as to the history of SE for grins. For the sake of risking the ultimate repost, I figured I would reveal the results of my search through those archives and present SE: Reset. See more in the extended.
As most people know, SE suffered a computer crash in '02, and its history was lost to the world, only to be saved at http://www.archive.org. By using its system, we can see what was kicking in the world of SE before 2002 going back as far as 2000. According to matt, it might go back even further...
[by fedhax@4:44amGMT] [+10 Good] Some of the old articles/posts, especially about the nursing mother who breast fed 16 people while stranded out at sea, were classic--almost vintage--SE. Surprisingly, most of the links are still archived and mostly work. Karma be damned, but I know I can't be the only one who will find these slices of SEcana interesting. If anyone would like, can people who date back that far provide any of their hindsight memories of SE past? SE: Typed Format - Id's new doom game back in 2001? http://web.archive.org/web/20010224172249/http://sensibleerection.com/ SE: Graymatter-Based - Akira Fubuki looks yummy http://web.archive.org/web/20010517015717/http://www.sensibleerection.com/ SE: Plain? - SE The Movie? http://web.archive.org/web/20011127155716/http://sensibleerection.com/ |

Heey, I really liked some of those old designs. Ok, some of them sucked, but not all. I'm especially fond of the grey/red period. |

You don't like this one? That's probably my favourite design for the site so far. Well, I'd be more fond of the current design if it were cleaned up a bit. This design started out well but has got cluttered over the years. |

Well, the design is nice, it's very tabloid style...but that gray, it just clashes with everything, it's so cloying, it overpowers the whole thing. I think if that was around still, I'd send 'Queer Eye for the Straight Website' over to see you. |

It's funny what gamma can do to an image. I agree with you, but I think I see his point as well. IIRC, you're on a powerbook. Same here, only I have a CRT hooked up as well with it's color and gamma adjusted to best match a default PC. Dragging the window over to that monitor suddenly makes it go from a stylish grey on the LCD to a pretty crappy overall look on the CRT. |

It goes back further, I think, if you know the domain name where it used to reside before sensibleerection.com. Also, a retrospective of early SE wouldn't be complete without plenty of mention of tristan. We don't see him around these parts much now, but back in the day it was tristan who dragged SE out of obscurity and pleased the crowds. |

Care to enlighten us as to the pre-SE days? This post is kinda hit & miss, but I know there are some people who wouldn't mind seeing the past or talking about it, especially since the pre-02 phase is gone to memory and archive.org. Speaking of tristan, mind chiming in, tristan? |

Considering how kind some people have been about my earlier site designs, I don't think I'm going to mention the pre-sensibleerection.com domain. If someone else pipes up with it, so be it, but the further back you go, the more personal the site was to me. Back when no one visited I could get away with talking about myself a lot more, much like livejournal kids do today. SE didn't start out as SE. SE started out as "Matt's Homepage", which was just a place for me to muck about, talk about whatever, try shit, etc. It's been a very evolutionary process to bring it to what it is now. Tristan lives out in the tranquil wops these days, and as such has a shitarse internet connection. Don't think he frequents these parts all that often. |

+1 Thanks Matt for Startign this kickassness. +1 I like the old style large thumbs in pr0n posts (even as I appreciatethe utility of the smaller ones) I do like the current style tho, easier to see stuff without wearing out my mouse wheel scrolling as much :-) |

said @ 6:43am GMT on 5th Nov
Yea the old bigger thumbs were great. It was wonderful to be able to make a thumb that really expressed the whole post, and made it look good. There were a couple of reasons why they had to go, one of them historical only. At a certain stage in SE's history, bandwidth became a serious concern financially, so image file sizes had to be pulled back drastically. That's not at all a concern now, but the desire to bring about a bit more post conformity, and the need to rein in growing casual abuse of thumbnail sizes was necessary. With only a handful of posters on the site, a lack of rules and a completely open approach to posting worked fine, but as things grew there was a need for structure. Believe me, I had a hell of a fight on my hands bringing about thumbnail size changes. People gnashed and wailed. |
