Bill Gates - Please Hire Me

quote [ Told by Microsoft interviewer that I did not fit their needs for the recruiting position. While this is a set-back, because I was not originally looking for a position as a recruiter I will continue towards my goal. ]

Check out this guy's Progress updates - it is interesting to follow the activity around this website.

One good comment on this guy and one bad comment:

The bad: When he's about 30 years old he will realize that all that crap he did in college really doesn't mean shit when it comes to working a real job, putting up with real management that have no business in management positions, and finding a new job after you realize the job of your dreams is a nightmare.

The Good: This guy has a good knack for marketing. He has gotten the attention of quite a number of people. He will have a job when he graduates.

The rest of the story: Guy gets job, 5 minutes of fame wears off, he realizes his job sucks, the people he works for suck. Guy finds another job, realizes the job sucks, the people he works for suck, and on and on and on. Guy dies in a tragic sewage truck explosion in New Zealand.

As a Development Manager in my 'day job', I can tell you that I wouldn't even call this individual for an interview - and I don't work for Microsoft (though I work for a very large technology firm).

For starters, he has no objective other than 'be hired by Microsoft'. If I saw a "I want to work for your company" objective, I'd instantly be skeptical. Work here as what? It shows a lack of direction and skills determination (perhaps more appropriately, misplaced direction - it's the "what", not the "where" that careers are developed on in the U.S.).

He's also a business major; Microsoft may well not hire business-types fresh out of school. Frankly, it's tough to get entry-level business-class positions within the technological workplace. They're driven by techies, who only hire the business folks to manage the non-product areas of a business. Hiring newbies makes no sense - you're bringing in people for their experience in that field. Of course, Microsoft may hire freshly-minted business grads, but most do not.

Next, his only claim to fame from a technical perspective is using MS products and teaching himself HTML. He hasn't bothered to learn any MS-specific technologies (at least, none were stated), which I'd think you'd want to learn, given that they're a technology company. Nor has he tried to find a Microsoft shop in which to get his feet wet; build the resume, and focus it on Microsoft.

Moving on, he does not seem to be much in the way of an individualist, which I know is important from the Microsoft perspective (from associates who work there). Of course, the truly ironic part is that these same 'individualists' become readily indoctrinated once they walk in the door. However, Microsoft's M.O. is to take such an individual, and focus their analytical skills, natural skepticism, and energies and direct them towards Microsoft's goals. Actually, it's a lot like the military :-)

Finally, he's a suck up. That's a death knell. While it's related to the point above, my point here is that his style, in addition to his substance, do not seem compatible with Redmond, Silicon Valley, or many of the other technology corridors. This applies to the business side, as well (not just the techies).

In short, his presentation is much more in line with the culture of, say, a consulting company, a pharmaceutical company, or a bank.

Of course, that's IMHO.

Thoughts?

Maybe he'll get hired somewhere for his marketing skills...

Hopefully Satan needs a new marketing team.
